WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's rugby team is gearing up to host Mary Washington this Saturday in their second match of the season. This game will also mark the start of Army's Rugby East conference play.
Both teams come into the match-up highly ranked, with Mary Washington sitting at #14 in D1A and Army ranked #7. The Black Knights are aiming to build on their strong start to the season, while the Eagles seek to upset one of the top teams in D1A.
Head coach Matt Sherman is focused on continued improvement. "Last week's performance had many strengths, but also several areas for growth. We've targeted those in practice, and we'll need to be at our best against a very talented Mary Washington team. Our focus remains on achieving our new best performance."
Last season, Army faced Mary Washington on the road in March, securing a 34-17 victory. Saturday's match will be only the third meeting between the two teams, with Army having won both previous contests.
Army's players eagerly anticipating the challenge. "Mary Washington is a skilled and well-coached team. They'll test us in new ways this Saturday, but our team is ready and confident," said Howie Heller. "This match is crucial for our season's trajectory."
Joey Knight added, "We've been working hard all week and will be ready for Saturday. Last week's win got our season off to a great start, and we're looking to build on that momentum against Mary Washington."
Gabe Savage echoed the team's excitement: "The boys are fired up to get back on the pitch. Last week's performance was dominant, and we want to prove that it wasn't just a one-off. We're ready to show up and show out. Beat Mary Washington!"
Kickoff is set for noon on Saturday at the Anderson Rugby Complex. Fans can stream the match live on YouTube via the following link.
