Silvestro's Olimpico Pushes Women's Soccer Past Providence
September 01, 2024 | Women's Soccer
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's soccer team closed out their record six game homestand in dramatic fashion with a 2-1 win over Providence in Malek Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Providence opened the first half on the front foot, holding possession and testing Army's backline early on. In the 15th minute the Friars had their break through to go up 1-0 early on.
After that the game flipped on its head. Army was able to maintain possession and started shooting at will, racking up eight first half shots. Despite going into the locker room at half down 1-0, the Black Knights had all the momentum, and it felt like a breakthrough was coming.
Sure enough, it would be none other than Brigid Duffy, scoring off passes from Hannah Pohlidal and Keira Vesy to pull Army level at 1-1 in the 53rd minute.
Army would keep the pressure on with great looks from Bella Conti and Sabrina Rogers, but the Black Knights were kept off the board.
Then after being awarded a corner in the 77th minute, Cami Silvestro pulled off the impossible: a go-ahead olympico. Firing the ball in off the corner, she put enough spin on the ball that it hooked in right around the near post to give Army a 2-1 lead.
The lead would hold for the remainder of the game giving Silvestro her second game winner of the season.
Sage Strohman continued her impressive season, making three saves on the day.
Army closes its six game homestand with a record of 5-1-0 with the only loss coming in a 1-0 defeat to current No. 18 Wake Forest.
The last time the Black Knights had a five game win streak was last season in conference play.
Next up is the first road trip of the season for the Black Knights, as they head to Minnesota to take on the Golden Gophers on Thursday at 8pm est.
