Cooke, Woodward Score As Women's Soccer Earns Third Straight Win
August 25, 2024 | Women's Soccer
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point women's soccer picked up its third straight win against Central Connecticut State on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 shutout.
The fans who came for the poster giveaway and postgame autographs got a fun start when Bella Conti found Bella Cooke for a goal in the second minute of the game.
Army kept the pressure on from the very jump racking up six shots in the first half. On top of a frantic pace on offense, the backline held it down allowing just one total shot and zero to get to goalkeeper Sage Strohman.
The second half was much of the same, Army pressure on offense leading to chance after chance. The Black Knights had 10 shots in the second half. In the 60th minute Army was awarded a corner kick, Cami Silvestro sent in an in swinging ball that was punched right to the head of Maddi Woodward about 17 yards out and she floated it over everyone into the back of the net to gibe Army a commanding 2-0 lead.
That would be all Army needed as Strohman was only called into action twice to earn her 21st career clean sheet.
Army played attacking soccer the entire game with nine different players getting a shot off compared to the four for the Blue Devils.
The win marks the third consecutive win for the Black Knights since their season opening loss to Wake Forest. Since that game they are outscoring opponents 8-2. Next up is a home matchup with a very strong Samford team that has made the NCAA Tournament three of the last five seasons. The match starts at 6pm on Wednesday.
