Lyons’ Penalty Gives Men’s Soccer Point at Temple

PHILADELPHIA – Army West Point Men's Soccer claimed an opening-night road point at Temple on Thursday night, with Gage Lyons scoring from the penalty spot to permanently level the scoreline at 1-1.
Jack Meyer sent in a cross attempt to Lyons at the outer edge of the 18-yard box, before the attacker drew contact to go down and earn a trip to the spot.
The Washington, D.C. native sent the ball to the lower right-hand corner of the net for Army's first goal of 2024, with 18:41 remaining on the second half game clock.
The Black Knights (0-0-1) recovered after allowing a first half goal in the 25', when Temple's George Medill finished a cross from Elias Betancourt in the top right of the goal off his right foot.
Army outshot the Owls 8-5 in the first half, but trailed in the category 11-9 after halftime.
The Cadets renewed a series not previously played since 1989, earning their first result over Temple since 1988 and their first point over the Owls in Philadelphia since 1987. Army returns to the City of Brotherly Love Sept. 9 to face Saint Joseph's and Oct. 11 for the Army-Navy Cup.
