Fink Qualifies for U.S. Olympic Trial Finals in Hammer Throw
June 21, 2024 | Women's Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Emily Fink qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trial Finals in the hammer throw with a throw of 65.81m. The throw slotted her in 10th place with the top 12 advancing to the final on Sunday night at 8:00pm est. The throw was a new PR.
HEAR FROM THE COACHES AND EMILY:
Coach Smith: "Emily Fink came into the US Olympic Trials ranked 22 of the 24 qualifiers in the women's hammer throw with a personal best of 65.81 meters (215' 11"). The rankings go straight off the performance list from 2024 and from the summer of 2023 so there was no reason to confidently predict that Emily would make the Olympic Trials final (top 12 advance) going into today. But that is why we have the meet. Emily threw 66.28 (217' 5") on her 2nd round throw today and qualified 10th for the trials final on Sunday. I don't have all of the history in front of me and we'll have to do a real scrub of our historical record at this meet to confirm it, but I think Emily might be the first female cadet to ever advance to the Olympic Trials final. She is very likely the first to ever advance to the hammer final. It's an incredible performance for Emily and indicative of the value of the hard work and perseverance that got her here. She will get a minimum of 3 more throws in the final with the top 8 qualifying for 3 more throws to decide the Olympic team."
Coach Hershberger: "Emily looked very relaxed at practice yesterday and while she was at the meet today. She has been steadily improving through the end of the outdoor season and she was ready to set a personal best at this meet."
Emily Fink: "I felt pretty good leaving practice yesterday. I think it took some time to find my rhythm competing today, but I feel like I'm starting to get there."
