May 09, 2024 | Softball
BRIGHTON, MASS.- The Army West Point softball team (14-37, 9-10 PL) faced a tough challenge against the top-seeded Boston University (50-4-1, 18-0 PL), falling 2-0 in the opening game of the Patriot League Softball Championships.
The first two innings saw both Boston and Army unable to score.
Army's starting pitcher, Amanda Eaglin, limited BU to just one hit in the initial two frames. However, BU gained momentum in the bottom of the third, led by Allison Boaz's triple.
The Terriers capitalized on an Army error to send Boaz home, taking the lead. Despite loading the bases with two hits and another error, Army's relief pitcher, Breanna Izzo, and the defense minimized damage, securing a crucial out and preventing further scoring with a double play.
Patriot League Pitcher of the Year, Kasey Ricard, continued to stifle Army's offense, delivering consecutive 1-2-3 innings and denying them a hit.
BU extended their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth due to another Army error.
Ricard maintained her dominance, swiftly retiring Army's hitters and giving BU ample opportunities to bat.
Despite BU loading the bases in the bottom of the fifth, Izzo and the Army defense held firm, preventing any further scoring.
The sixth inning remained scoreless as Army struggled to generate hits, while BU threatened but failed to capitalize, thanks to Izzo and the defense.
In the top of the seventh, Ashton White broke through with a single to left center for Army, but they couldn't convert the momentum into runs, ultimately falling to BU 2-0.
