COACHES CORNER
Men
Tough loss for our men today. We had 7 event wins and we had some strong individual performances but not enough to win the meet. The upside from today is that our plebes and yearlings turned in some of our best performances. The 4x100 meter relay team (Hammond, Matthews, McGinnis, Duncan) won with a season best time and #6 all-time Army performance (40.56). There are 3 plebes on that team so I was impressed with how they competed. Josh Duncan '27 came back later to win the 100 meters and was closely followed by fellow plebe, Jaxon Hammond '27 in 3rd place. Jaxon played in the football scrimmage this morning and then came down to the meet to help us win the 4x100. He is an impressive young man without his athletic accomplishments but what he did today was on another level of impressive. In the men's shot put, Robby Manse '26 almost pulled off a huge upset with his 3rd round throw of 17.98 meters (59'). That throw moved him into the lead briefly but didn't hold up in the end. He now ranks #4 all-time at Army in the shot and served notice today that he is a threat to win this meet in the future. Caleb Smith '26, took home the win in the long jump with an early round leap of 7.19 meters (23' 7.25") His approach today was very consistent in conditions that were not consistent. The wind was at times strong and at other times swirling and it was overcast and cold. Less than ideal conditions for the jumps and sprints. That didn't seem to affect our guys. The only event sweep we had on the men's side was in the 800 meters. Ammon Smith '27 was buried in the field and sitting 5th with 400 meters to go. He started to move on the turn and then bolted to the front with about 250 meters to go and managed to hold the lead all the way to the line. He was closely followed by Kasen Jeitz '26 to complete the 1-2 finish. Those two guys took a big step today. Cameron Smith '24 won the men's hammer in a close competition and Josh Gilliard '24 brought home the title in the high jump. Those two guys are seasoned veterans on our team and they will continue to win events and compete at a high level. In the end, we have to get better if we want to this meet. Our young guys showed that we are headed in the right direction and I think we will have a strong spring season to build some more momentum going into next year.
Women
I thought that this would be a tight meet all the way until the end. As it turned out, we jumped to an early lead and we were in position to win the meet halfway through the running events but then some events didn't go our way and we ended up falling too far behind to catch up. The first big win for us today came from Lindsay Smith '24 in the long jump. She won that event at the indoor meet and claimed the indoor/outdoor sweep with her strong early mark today. Our early success today was in large part due to the strong start our throwers gave us. We were counting on that group to perform and they did that and more all day. We went 1-2-3 in both the shot put and the discus. We expected to win both of those events, but the 3 woman sweep is rare at this meet. Emily Fink '26 won the hammer throw which was the first event of the day and came back later to claim the shot put title. And although she wasn't thrilled with her marks, she did a nice job in cold and windy conditions and got the wins. Karly Parcel '26 brought home the win in the discus. I was happy to see her get the win today after she struggled in the fall to come back from a surgery. Her rapid resurgence has been great to see and the win today was a great reward for all of her hard work. Mikayla Cheney '27 won a tactical 1500 meter race. She is a good racer and we saw her talent for competition come forward in the last lap of the 1500 today. She was able to get to the front and then hold off surging runners on her way to the win. She has had a great start to the season and there is much more individual acclaim coming her way this spring. The biggest star for us today was Emma Taylor '24. She was part of three wins (100, 200, 4x400). She has made herself into a dominant force at this meet and will be a major threat at the Patriot League Championship later this spring. She looked good in winning the 100 in 11.72 but even better in the 200 (24.12). That mark ranks #2 all-time at Army and her win in that race was never close. She is one of our most valuable performers and today she came through multiple times. We are lucky to have her and I expect that she will have some more outstanding races in the coming weeks. It was a disappointing outcome today. We have to get better if we want to compete to win this meet.
