HAMILTON, NY – Army West Point women's lacrosse (9-7, 7-2 Patriot League) wrapped up the regular season with a 13-10 victory at Colgate (3-13, 3-6 Patriot League) on Thursday night.
The Black Knights have secured the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament and will host sixth-seeded Lehigh on Sunday at noon for a Patriot League quarterfinal matchup.
Neither side was able to score more than four goals in any quarter in a fairly low-scoring affair in Hamilton, as Brigid Duffy led all scorers with four goals. Julia Gorajek added a hat trick while Allison Reilly logged three points in the winning effort.
Lindsey Serafine improved to 7-2 in her nine starts in conference play this season, making nine saves on the night. Ryan Remaly caused a pair of turnovers to help lead the defensive effort while adding a goal.
The teams traded scoreless possessions through the opening four minutes before Julia Gorajek opened the scoring with an unassisted tally, as the teams would then go scoreless for the ensuing six minutes.
Colgate found its first goal of the game at the 5:15 mark of the first quarter and would go on a 3-0 spurt to jump ahead 3-1. Remaly eventually gave the Black Knights momentum heading into the second quarter, scoring with just seven seconds left in the opening frame off an assist from Reilly.
The Army defense held firm in the second quarter, allowing just two goals in total before the half with the second coming in the final minute. Army used a 3-0 run to start the frame behind a goal from Gabrielle Mirak before Duffy got on the scoresheet with a pair from the eight-meter to make it a 5-3 game.
Lily Valentini scored the sixth tally of the game for the Black Knights off an assist from Carleigh Armstrong, which eventually gave Army a 6-5 lead at halftime. Army held a 16-11 advantage in shots through the opening half hour despite losing the draw 9-4.
Army ensured its lead would be protected in the opening stages of the second half, with Armstrong and Reilly netting the first two tallies of the half to push the Army lead to 8-5. The Raiders answered midway through the frame, but Duffy and Gorajek added goals to give Army a 10-6 advantage. A last-minute goal in the third made it 10-7 heading into the final quarter.
Army's defense was able to hold the lead with the offense producing 13 total goals, the second lowest total in a conference game this season. Colgate was held scoreless for the first 11 minutes of the fourth, with three consecutive goals from Army's top three scorers in Duffy, Reilly and Gorajek making it a 13-7 lead with four minutes to play.
Controlling the lead at the end of the game, the Raiders pushed across three goals in the final 3:13 to bring the final score to 13-10. Army was once again prominent in the clear, going 16-17 while recording ten of the 13 ground balls in the contest.
The Black Knights have now recorded at least a 7-2 conference record in each of Michelle Tumolo's first three seasons at the helm of the program. Army will take a three-game winning streak into its quarterfinal matchup on Sunday against Lehigh.
