Women's Lacrosse Falls at No. 21 Navy

ANNAPOLIS, MD - Army West Point women's lacrosse (6-7, 4-2 Patriot League) fell by a score of 17-11 to No. 21 Navy (11-3, 5-1 Patriot League) as part of the Star Series presented by USAA on Saturday afternoon.
The Midshipmen dominated the draw 26-5 to help outshoot the Black Knights 42-26 in the game. Lindsey Serafine made a career-high 16 saves in the cage for the Black Knights to keep Army in the game throughout, but Navy was able to hold onto its multi-goal lead through the final three quarters.
Julia Gorajek logged a season-high five goals to go along with three caused turnovers in a standout performance, as Brigid Duffy added three points to help lead the offensive effort.
With Navy winning the opening draw of the game, Serafine was tasked early on as she made a pair of saves including one on a free-position attempt before the Black Knights were able to possess the ball. Army made the most of its first possession, with Duffy breaking free from her defender before shooting across her body and into the top left corner for the first goal of the game.
The Midshipmen would score next to even the game with a free-position goal before taking a 2-1 lead off the ensuing draw win. The sides went scoreless for the ensuing six-plus minutes, the eventual longest scoreless drought of the game. Gorajek got Army going once again with a goal from the eight-meter, with Duffy giving Army back the lead with another free-position conversion.
After Maggie DeFabio evened the score at three with 2:54 in the frame, Navy continued to secure the draw and convert on the offensive end, scoring three times in the final minute as the Mids won the first nine draw controls of the game. Army secured its first in the closing seconds of the quarter, with Duffy then feeding Gorajek to beat te buzzer and post a 6-4 scoreline after 15 minutes of play.
Navy extended its lead with the first two goals of the second, with Gorajek then answering with quickfire goals within a minute to get Army back within two at 8-6, with just under ten minutes to play before halftime. However, the Black Knights would register five shots and four turnovers in the final 9:41 of the half without registering a goal. Navy tacked on a pair of free-position goals before a goal in the final minute saw the Mids take an 11-6 lead into halftime.
Navy outshot the Black Knights 25-15 in the opening half hour while winning 17 of 19 draws. Army was just 9-12 in the clear in the half, after coming into the game with a top-20 clear in the country at 91.4-percent. Serafine had nine saves at the half on 20 shots faced.
The second half brought more of the same with Navy continuing to have the advantage in the draw circle. Army scored four times in the third quarter but were only ever able to bring it back within a four-goal deficit. Duffy notched on her fourth point with an assist to Allison Reilly to open the second half scoring, with Lily Valentini getting the next tally for Army which made it 12-8.
The Black Knights were still within striking distance at 15-10 entering the fourth quarter, after goals in the final 75 seconds of the third from both Ryan Remaly and Careligh Armstrong. Navy was was able to see out the final 15 minutes with just three goals being scored in the final stanza. Gorajek had the lone deposit for Army to notch her season-best fifth of the fixture.
Serafine continued to make saves down the stretch, eventually notching her career-high total with 16. Navy scored the final two of the game, bringing the final score to 17-11 from Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. It marked the first Star Game win for the Mids since 2021 as Army is now 3-2 in its past five contests overall with its rival.
Army will look to back bounce on Wednesday at home with a matchup against Holy Cross at 6:00 p.m. from Michie Stadium.
