March 04, 2024 | Men's Basketball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After an all-time freshman season, Josh Scovens has been named Patriot League Rookie of the Year the league announced this afternoon. Joining him on the All-Rookie Team is teammate, Ryan Curry.
"This recognition for Josh and Ryan is very well-deserved, and I could not be any prouder of them," Said Lee Anderson Head Coach Kevin Kuwik. "As a freshman, Josh has been the focal point of opposing defenses all season and has repeatedly risen to the occasion, and on the biggest stage of the Army-Navy game he led us to victory. Ryan has provided great leadership in our backcourt all year, and in just the third game of the season at Indiana he did not back down and showed he was not your average freshmen. Most importantly, Josh and Ryan together have infused our program with a spirit of toughness and competitiveness that I believe will allow them to lead us to greater successes moving forward."
The two star freshman led the team in scoring and brought home Patriot League Rookie of the Week a program record tying seven times combined (Scovens 5, Curry 2).
Scovens takes home Rookie of the Year honors after leading all Patriot League freshman in points per game (11.9), rebounds per game (5.2), defensive rebounds per game (4.0), and blocks (1.2). He was also third amongst Patriot League rookies in assists (1.8).
Curry came in second amongst league freshman in scoring (10.1 PPG), assists (3.0 APG), three point percentage (.331), three pointers made (58), while leading all rookies in assist/turnover ratio (1.68).
This is the second season in a row a Black Knights has won Patriot League Rookie of the Year, with Ethan Roberts winning last season. Josh Scovens Rookie year will go down in the Army history books as one of the best ever, but his legendary status was truly cemented in the Star Game when he hit three clutch free throws in overtime to beat Navy. He also became the first Army freshman to ever score 20 or more points in three consecutive games. On Dec. 18 he became only the second player ever to win Patriot League Rookie and Player of the Week in the same week after he became the first player in Patriot League history (with tracked data) to score 30 points while shooting 80 percent from the field and 75 percent from three with at least eight attempts from deep and only the 47th in D1 history and only the seventh freshman. He had two double-doubles on the season.
