March 02, 2024 | Women's Basketball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's basketball team (12-15, 9-8 PL) fell at home to the Loyola Maryland Greyhounds (15-13, 10-7 PL), 55-52 on Senior Day. Before the game, Army honored and recognized its three seniors, Lauren Lithgow, Sam McNaughton and Reagan Warren.
The ceremony featured a heart-felt moment, as Sam McNaughton's brother surprised her returning home from a deployment in the U.S. Army.
Lithgow led the Black Knights in scoring with 15 points, on 5-9 shooting from the field, connecting on three three-pointers.
How It Happened
Trailing six entering the second quarter, Army held Loyola to nine points in the second quarter to take a two-point lead into half, 30-28.
Army used a 9-0 run to early in the second that featured a three-point play by freshman Kya Smith to take a 22-21 lead. In the quarter, Army held Loyola to 25% shooting from the field and 1-6 from three-point. The difference was Army being aggressive and getting to the free throw line, converting 7-8 from the line as Loyola did not attempt a free throw in the second quarter.
The third quarter was tightly contested with the biggest lead for either side was four points for Army, after a Lithgow made three.
Late in the fourth, Loyola would capture a four-point lead after a Kelly Ratigan three, 51-47.
Trailing five with 47 seconds to go, Lithgow made her third three of the afternoon to cut the lead down to two, 52-50.
Army gave themselves a chance, following an incredible defensive play by Lithgow tying up Greyhounds Ava Therien for a jump ball instead of fouling with 22 seconds to go giving Army possession of the basketball down by two points.
Looking for a bucket to tie or potentially take the lead and the win, Army turned the ball over in the final second and was not able to get a shot off as Loyola Maryland hung on for a tough, fought, 55-52 victory.
Lex Therien scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the Greyhounds.
No other Black Knight was in double-figures besides Lithgow.
