Baseball Drops Weekend Finale at Fordham
March 17, 2024 | Baseball
BRONX, N.Y. – Army West Point Baseball dropped a result at Fordham's Houlihan Park Sunday, struggling to get the offense activated until the ninth inning as they fell 4-2 in the Bronx on St. Patrick's Day.
The Black Knights did not go away quietly, however. In the final inning, Carter Hewitt worked his way to third base with a hit by pitch drawn followed by a pair of passed balls. After Thomas Schreck drove him home with an RBI groundout, Mark Abell had a pinch-hit home run to cut the deficit to two.
Sam Ruta walked a plate appearance later, bringing Braden Golinski to the plate as the tying run. However, he couldn't reach base and Army ran out of outs.
Starting pitcher Justin Lehman tossed five frames, striking out four and allowing just five baserunners. But the junior took the decision after giving up a solo home run in the third inning.
The Rams extended their lead in the seventh, scoring three runs to go ahead by four.

3.0: Joe Valchar tossed three innings in relief of Lehman.
7: Five Black Knights combined to draw seven walks Sunday, with Ruta and Golinski drawing a pair each.

Plebe catcher Max McGlone made career debut in the eighth inning.
Abell's home run was the first in his first career.
