February 09, 2024 | Hockey
WEST POINT, NY - Army West Point hockey (9-19-1, 7-13-1 Atlantic Hockey) picked up a 3-1 victory over Robert Morris (9-19-3, 6-13-2 Atlantic Hockey) on Friday night at Tate Rink.
Michael Sacco scored a pair of goals for the Black Knights after Brent Keefer potted the first for Army on his way to a three-point night. Evan Szary made 30 saves in net to pick up his eighth win on the campaign. It marks the second time this season the Army has won back-to-back games in conference play as the Black Knights jumped over the Colonials and Mercyhurst in the AHA standings with the three points.
The first half of the game saw a goaltenders duel between Szary and Chad Veltri for RMU as the netminders each had 16 stops at the second media timeout with a scoreless tie. The tie was finally broken with just over five minutes remaining in the period, as Jude Brower found Brent Keefer on a stretch pass entering the zone, as Keefer then fired into the top right corner for his twelth tally of the campaign. Robert Morris had the majority of its chances in the second frame, firing 17 shots on target including three on its first power-play as Szary continued to keep the Colonials off the board.
RMU was able to tie the score two minutes into the third period, with Jackson Reineke finished a feed from Rylee St. Onge for his eighth tally of the season. The Colonials had a power-play right after, with Szary making a key glove save on Cameron Garvey to keep the score level at one.
The deadlock would last only four minutes, as Brent Keefer was able to catch an attempted clearance from the Colonials and feed Sacco who had positioned himself netfront and slam home his fourth goal of the season. Army dictated play with its 2-1 lead, with Robert Morris eventually pulling Veltri with just udner two minutes remaining. The Colonials took a delayed penalty with the net empty, setting up a unique six-on-six scenario with zero goaltenders on the ice. It was Keefer and Sacco eventually combining again for the game-clincher, as Keefer laid off to Sacco who deposited his second of the game while Keefer logged his third point.Â
The two sides will return tomorrow for game two with puck drop set for 6:00 p.m. from Tate Rink.
