February 27, 2024 | Women's Basketball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's basketball team (12-14, 9-7 PL) secured a big road win in Washington, D.C. over the American Eagles (9-17, 7-8 PL), by a score of 66-52.
Junior Trinity Hardy led the way with 16 points also grabbing five rebounds.
How It Happened
Army attacked early getting out to a 12-4 lead after a pair of Lauren Lithgow made free throws and never looked back. The Black Knights would lead for the entire game, despite American going on several runs in the third quarter to threaten, but Army was always able to respond.
In the second, Freshman Fiona Hastick connected on a three, pushing Army out to a 19-11 lead. Soon after, Lithgow was good from three, helping Army maintain a 22-11 lead in what became a 10-0 run for the Black Knights after a layup by Addison Ainsworth.
Ainsworth provided a major spark to the lineup, making her second career start, coming in back-to-back games. She scored a career-high 12 points, logging six rebounds in 23 minutes of action.
Army led by 11 points at the half. Lithgow led the first half scoring with nine.
American came out strong in the second half cutting Army's lead down to five, 39-34 halfway through the quarter.
Despite sloppy play at times, a game in which Army had 20 turnovers and shot 3-17 from three-point distance which included 0-9 from three in the second half, the Black Knights remained resilient.
Army worked the lead back to eight, but American's Emily Johns would connect on a jumper before the quarter was over to make it a five-point game heading into the final 10 minutes of action.
Johns, American's leading scorer for the season, ran into foul trouble in the second half and would eventually foul out in the fourth.
In the fourth, Army would score a game-best 21 points in the quarter and lock down American to just 12 points to gain control of the game.
Freshman Kya Smith would convert on a big three-point opportunity to grow Army's lead to seven and Hardy would score eight of her 16 points down the stretch in the fourth to help seal the game.
