Hockey Picks Up Shootout Victory Over AIC
February 23, 2024 | Hockey
WEST POINT, NY - Army West Point hockey (10-21-2, 8-15-2 Atlantic Hockey) collected two points on the night via a shootout win after a 2-2 tie with AIC (15-14-4, 11-10-4 Atlantic Hockey) on Friday night from Tate Rink.
Gavin Abric made 36 saves on the night to go along with a crucial pair in the shootout as Vincent Salice and Joey Baez each deposited goals in the shootout to propel the Black Knights. Salice scored the first goal in regulation for Army while Pierce Patterson had the second which marked his third power-play goal in two games.
AIC could not have gotten out to a better start to the game, scoring a goal ten seconds in through Jordan Biro who had a quick takeaway in Army's defensive end. It was all Yellow Jackets for the first period, firing 20 shots on goal compared to Army's seven as the Black Knights had to kill off a five-minute major in the middle of the frame. Abric was up to the task to keep it a one-goal game, including a highlight reel effort at full extension to rob Dustin Manz of a goal that would've made it a 2-0 game.
Still trailing by one into the second period, Army tied the score through Salice who scored his fourth of the campaign off tight angle after a draw win from Hunter McCoy. AIC responded less than five minutes later, with Oscar Geschwind scoring off a zone entry rush with Hunter Jones finding him. Each team killed off a penalty in the latter stages of the second, as AIC held a 2-1 lead at the second intermission.
The Black Knights got their third power-play opportunity of the game after an AIC holding penalty 16 seconds into third, as Army capitalized to even the score. Mac Gadowsky fed Pierce Patterson at the right circle who fired in wirstshot that Nils Wallstrom got a piece of but eventually found the back of the net. Army controlled the third outshooting AIC 14-5 while killing off its fourth penalty of the night late on. With both teams looking for important points, 60 minutes was not enough to separate the two sides as we headed to Tate Rink's first overtime frame of the season. Army was 0-3-1 in overtimes this season entering play.
The Black Knights held the majority of possession in the extra frame, firing three shots on goal while AIC was not able to test Abric during three-on-three play. Army entered its second shootout of the season, with Salice getting the nod first and beating Wallstrom to put Army ahead. After a stop from Abric, Joey Baez did his part with a shootout score as Army led 2-0. Following an AIC goal and Army miss, Abric stepped up for one last save on Hunter Longhi as Army secured the pivotal extra point.
The teams will return for the regular season finale tomorrow at 4:00 p.m., marking senior day at Tate Rink.
