Hockey Falls to AIC on Senior Night to Close Regular Season
February 24, 2024 | Hockey
WEST POINT, NY - Army West Point hockey (10-22-2, 8-16-2 Atlantic Hockey) ended the regular season with a 5-1 defeat to AIC (16-14-4, 12-10-4 Atlantic Hockey) on Saturday afternoon from Tate Rink.
Army honored its Firstie Class of 2024 as part of senior night festivities, recognizing Gavin Abric, Jake Felker, Eric Huss and Ricky Lyle.Â
The Black Knights were unable to take momentum from Friday's shootout victory into the Saturday finale, as AIC netted the first two goals in the first period and would not relinquish its lead. Dustin Manz opened the scoring with a power-play goal 9:17 into the game as Dario Beljo made it a 2-0 game 61 seconds later. Shots were even at eight apiece following the frame as the penalty box was filled throughout via four minor penalties from each team in the opening twenty minutes.Â
The second period brought eight more penalties, once again being four from each team. Manz deposited his second power-play score of the game at the 9:01 mark to give AIC a 3-0 advantage, while Andrew Amousse scored his first of the season later in the period. AIC scored its two goals in the second on just five shots on goal, as Nils Wallstrom had a stout performance in net for the Yellow Jackets, stopping 23 of 23 shots in the first two periods.
Trailing 4-0 throughout the final frame, Army got on the board late with a goal from Nik Hong. After winning the faceoff himself, Hong took a pass from John Driscoll off the end boards and tucked home his seventh goal of the season to spoil the shutout for Wallstrom with 4:28 to play.
Army pulled Abric from goal with just over three minutes to play looking to mount a miraculous comeback, but the Yellow Jackets found the empty net goal through Tomi Leppanen who made it a 5-1 final score.
The Black Knights have secured the No. 10 seed in the Atlantic Hockey playoffs, and will take on seventh-seeded Niagara on the road next Saturday at 7:00 p.m. for a spot in the quarterfinals.
