Baseball Rally Falls Short Against Fordham

DeLAND, Fla. – Army West Point Baseball rallied late, but fell 9-7 to the Fordham Rams on the campus of Stetson University Friday.

Down 9-2 heading into the eighth inning in DeLand, Fla., the Black Knights ferociously stormed back to get within two run of their New York in-state foes, but were unable to complete the comeback.

Army (2-3) plated its first three batters of the eighth, and begun its rally with a William Parker RBI single. Zac Farrell then doubled down the left field line to cut the deficit to 9-5. Chris Barr and Sam Ruta then each followed with two-out RBI, cutting Fordham's advantage to two runs.

LHP Sean Dennehy sat the Rams down in order in the bottom of the eighth. But the Black Knights couldn't muster more runs in the ninth in the loss.

Starting pitcher Matthew Ronnebaum absorbed the decision, going four innings. Trevor Finan entered in relief of Ronnebaum in the fifth, before Justin Lehman tossed 2.1 innings out of the bullpen for his season pitching debut.

The Rams opened the scoring with five runs in the second and padded their lead with two runs each in the fourth and fifth.

Army got on the scoreboard in the fourth, off a Coleson Titus RBI double. Thomas Schreck then scored Golinski in the sixth on a single through the left side.

By the Numbers

3-for-5: Golinski went 3-for-5 and had three runs Friday, along with a double.

6: The Black Knights had six doubles, each coming from a different hitter.

2: Zac Farrell came off the bench to play right field and had two RBIs.

Black Knight Notes

Through five games in 2024, Army has kept the same starting lineup combination at each non-battery field position. Only the pitcher, catcher and DH spots have been changed.

Ruta has logged a hit in each game this season, and Barr has also reached base in each game.

Army's 13 hits Friday represent a season-high.

Next Up

Army will play its second game of the round robin Saturday at 5:00 p.m. against hosts Stetson.
