Hockey Collects 3-0 Win Over Niagara Behind Abric Shutout

NIAGARA, UNIVERSITY., NY - Army West Point hockey (10-21-1, 8-15-1 Atlantic Hockey) recorded its second shutout victory of the season with a 3-0 win over Niagara (13-15-3, 11-9-3 Atlantic Hockey) to earn the series split.
Pierce Patterson scored the first two goals for the Black Knights, both coming via the power-play as Joey Baez then notched his team-leading 14th goal of the campaign on the empty net to seal the victory. Gavin Abric recorded his first shutout of the season in goal, making 36 saves to blank the Purple Eagles.
The Black Knights came out looking to rebound from Friday night's 6-3 defeat the the hand of the Purple Eagles, as Army put together one if its best periods of the season to start. The Black Knights killed off a pair of power-plays in the opening frame while scoring on a power-play of its own. The goal came just three seconds into the man advantage, as Nik Hong won the faceoff to Jake Hewitt who slid the puck across to Pierce Patterson who fired in his second goal of the season off a ferocious one-timer. Gavin Abric got the nod in goal for Army and made eight saves in the opening frame as Army eventually fired a season-high 18 shots on goal in the period and took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The second saw Niagara push for the equalizer, before halting its momentum by taking its third major penalty of the series at the 7:31 mark, but the Purple Eagles were able to get through unscathed as we reached the second half of the contest. However, Army continued to get opportunities with the man-advantage, as Niagara gave the Black Knights 14 power-plays across both games which included three five-minute majors. On Army's next opportunity, Patterson fired in his second of the game with 4:05 to play in the second, slamming in another one-timer with this one coming off a feed from Mac Gadowsky. Abric made 13 more saves in the second frame as Army lead 2-0 heading into the third.
Abric continued to be the story for Army, making 36 saves in total on his way to his seventh career shutout and first of the season. Army killed off its lone penalty of the final frame, eventually scoring its third goal via an empty-netter from Joey Baez after Ricky Lyle poked the puck away in the defensive end. The 3-0 win marked Army's second shutout victory of the season. Nik Hong led the Black Knights in the faceoff circle going 14-25 while John Driscoll blocked four shots as one of five Black Knights in total to block multiple Niagara attempts.Â
Army will return home for its final series of the regular season against AIC, with Saturday's contest marking senior night for Army's firstie class.
