Women's Basketball Wins Fifth Straight Game on Education Day
January 31, 2024 | Women's Basketball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's basketball team (9-10, 6-3 PL) extended its win streak to five games, the longest in Head Coach Missy Traversi's Army tenure defeating the Colgate Raiders (11-9, 4-5), 55-52 at Christl Arena on Wednesday morning. Army was powered by the balanced scoring efforts of freshman Fiona Hastick (16 points), Trinity Hardy (15 points), and freshman Kya Smith (12 points).
How It Happened
In a packed Christl Arena of screaming local elementary kids on Army's education day, Sophomore Reese Ericson nailed a three-pointer to kick off the scoring which ignited the kids immediately. All day long, the Black Knights fed from the loud and energetic environment that the children provided.
A layup by freshman Kya Smith gave Army a 13-12 lead with under two minutes to go in the quarter giving Army a one-point advantage heading into the second. Smith continued her burst of scoring, scoring Army's first four points in the second quarter as well. Trinity Hardy capped off a beautiful three-point play by converting on a driving layup in which she was fouled to extend Army's second-quarter lead to six, 22-16. At the break, Army led 24-20.
In the third, Army used a 7-0 run which was crescendoed by a beautiful find by Reese Ericson to hit a cutting Camryn Tade for a layup, pushing the lead to 39-32.
In the fourth, freshman Fiona Hastick scored eight of her 16 points, including six straight for the Black Knights as the game went back and forth for much of the quarter. A three-pointer by Colgate's Alexa Brodie gave the Raiders a lead, 46-45 with 5:04 to play. Army was able to recapture the lead on a made layup by Hastick, at 48-46. Colgate's Morgan McMahon would answer with her own layup and knot the score again at 48-48. With 36 seconds remaining, Army's Kya Smith was fouled and knocked down both of her foul shots to give Army the two-point advantage. More made free throws by Hardy and Sam McNaughton would seal the victory for the Black Knights, 55-52.
Colgate was led by Alexa Brodie's 17 points.
With the win, Army improves to 6-3 in Patriot League play which is good for third currently in the standings, behind Holy Cross (8-1) and American (6-2).
