WEST POINT, NY -Â The Army West Point Athletics Association's Academic Support team has selected its scholar-athletes for the month of January, recognizing men's basketball senior Abe Johnson and women's basketball freshman Camryn Tade.
Men's Basketball - Abe Johnson '24
CDT Abe Johnson, a senior and starting captain on the Army West Point Men's Basketball Team, has emerged as one of the team's leaders on and off the court. Abe's solid play has led him to earn significant minutes this season, including a starting role in 9 out of 16 games played. Thus far, Abe has averaged nearly 6 points per game on an impressive 60.7% from the field. Abe has especially made his presence felt on the defense end, as he is tied for the team lead in blocks with 20 and is second on the team in rebounding with 5.5 rebounds per game. The month of January has been a great one thus far for Abe, as he posted a collegiate career-high 17 points and 8 rebounds against Loyola, Maryland, and 6 points, 8 rebounds, and a collegiate career-high 5 blocks against American University. His leadership and ability have contributed to the team's competitive play. His toughness on the court, leadership in the huddle, and work ethic in practice and during games inspire his teammates.
In addition to his athletic contributions, Abe has performed exceptionally well in the classroom. Abe earned a 3.47 semester GPA in fall 2023, raising his cumulative GPA to 3.24. Within his Systems and Decision Sciences major, he currently has a cumulative academic performance of 3.29! His consistent demonstration of academic excellence is evidenced by earning recognition on the Dean's List in five of seven semesters at the Academy. His preparedness, organization, and engagement in class are professional examples for all cadets to emulate. The evidence lies in his writing the best SOSH and Pershing papers in his respective sections. Further evidence is in Abe's capstone research efforts, where his team is working to improve a simulated marksmanship test developed by the DEVCOM Soldier Center. They are applying systems engineering techniques to generate possible solutions to provide soldiers with improved feedback during testing.
In his company, CDT Abe Johnson is recognized as an extraordinary leader and teammate through consistent excellence in executing his military duties and responsibilities. Abe started the year strong, earning the "Best CFT 1 Company Commander" award during Cadet Field Training. His recognition was largely due to his personal example while training the rising Yearling Class in basic leadership skills and competencies. His peers and subordinates alike appreciated his commonsense approach and steady demeanor. Abe carried that momentum into the academic year, supporting his A3 "Anacondas" through formal and informal leadership roles, serving in multiple staff lead roles. Abe Johnson shows great promise as he graduates and is commissioned as an officer this May.
Head Coach Kevin Kuwik adds, "First and foremost, I could not be prouder and more certain of the fact that Abe Johnson is going to be an outstanding officer and platoon leader. We ask so much of the young men in our program, and Abe exceeds the standard by far in every facet as a player, teammate, student, and leader both on and off the court. Abe's progression as a player from not appearing in a single game as a plebe to earning a starting spot as a firstie has been remarkable, and I cannot say enough about how he goes about his business every day, setting a tremendous example of work ethic, consistency, and the pursuit of excellence for all the younger players in our program to emulate."
Women's Basketball - Camryn Tade '27
Cadet Camryn Tade embodies the Women's Basketball Team's motto of "No Excuses!" Camryn is a natural on the court as well as in the classroom. Texas native CDT Tade balances the requirements of being a Division 1 college athlete, a leader, and a teammate all while performing exceptionally well in the academic arena. Camryn cares deeply about the program and continues to exceed the standard for off-court expectations. Camryn's success in her first year at West Point is only scratching the surface of what she will achieve as a Cadet Scholar-Athlete. Coach Sacha highlights, "Camryn is the example of work ethic. She comes in daily, puts in the effort and time at a high level and takes pride in her work and commitment to the program. Also, she is part of our leadership buckets to help her grow as a leader. She has spent time leading the Classroom and On-Court Bucket. Off the court, Camryn's mentality doesn't change. She continues to set goals in all areas, embraces challenges and sets out to achieve those no matter what. We are thankful to have Camryn a part of our program."
As a freshman, Camryn serves the team as a versatile guard and has brought a fierce dedication to the court. Tade leads the team in FG percentage, assist to turnover ratio (ave 3.2 p/game) and fourth in rebounding at 3.1 per game. Her career high came against FDU in November. Most recently, she was a true asset in the win over Navy, playing 29 minutes, 4-5 in FG with 9 points and 4 steals! Camryn also helped propel the team to another stunning victory with 8 points, career high 8 rebounds and 2 assists.
Tade has always been a tremendous student and her performance in her first year at West Point shows she is not slowing down. With only one full semester under her belt, her performance is a testament to her academic excellence. She earned her place on the Dean's list with a 3.3 GPA. Notably, Tade's PPSC (Physical Program Performance Score Cumulative) score is 3.45 showcasing her excellence in physical fitness. She has earned an A in multiple courses in her very first semester at West Point: As a freshman, Tade is already an example to those around her, demonstrating relentless hard-work and continuous improvement. Cadet Camryn Tade is the epitome of a Scholar-Athlete.
