WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point Athletics Association's Academic Support team has selected its scholar-athletes for the month of April, recognizing the Rabble Rousers' Gillian Spilker and Softball's Hannah Laub.
Gillian Spilker '27 (Rabble Rousers)
Cadet Gillian Spilker, a junior and veteran of the Rabble Rousers Cheer Team, consistently demonstrates the pursuit of excellence in academics, athletics, and military endeavors. An American Politics major with a minor in Regional Studies—Latin America, Cadet Spilker currently maintains a 3.796 GPA, the highest GPA of a veteran athlete on the team.
Cadet Spilker studied abroad at Brazil's Military Engineering Institute, where she excelled academically and militarily, becoming one of only two USMA cadets to graduate from the demanding Jungle Adaptation Course at the Brazilian Army Staff College. This achievement reflects her exceptional discipline, resilience, and adaptability. Without question, Cadet Spilker consistently gives her best to every endeavor.
Upon completing her studies in Brazil, Cadet Spilker rejoined the Rabble Rousers with renewed enthusiasm, focus, and energy. Known as a selfless team player and steady presence, she approaches every practice with 100% effort, maintains a consistently positive attitude, and fosters an environment where teammates feel valued and motivated. As a result of these attributes, she made immediate and meaningful contributions to the team's success, helping COED achieve its best performance on a national stage at the 2026 NCA College Nationals in the Advanced Division 1A category.
Cadet Spilker's vibrant energy, professionalism, and commitment elevated team culture and performance both on and off the mat. She exemplifies the ideal balance of scholar, athlete, and leader, and is highly deserving of recognition as Scholar-Athlete of the Month.
Hannah Laub '28 (Softball)
What began as a walk-on opportunity has become a statement season for Army West Point Softball's Hannah Laub, Class of 2028. A first-year softball player, the Naperville, Ill. native has emerged as one of the most productive hitters in the Black Knights' lineup.
Since joining the program as a walk on, Laub has established herself as a reliable contributor and emerging leader, earning multiple Patriot League honorable mention recognitions in her first season of play. She has consistently delivered at the plate, posting a team-leading .407 batting average and a 1.181 on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS). Laub has recorded 33 hits, including five doubles and six home runs, while driving in 23 runs. Her power at the plate has been part of a historic offensive season for the Army Softball program, which set a new single season record for home runs.
Laub's impact extends beyond offensive production. Her consistency, preparation, and competitiveness have made her a trusted presence in the lineup early in her collegiate career.
"Hannah has made an immediate impact in her first year," observes Army Softball Head Coach Jen Consaul. "Beyond the numbers, Laub is known as one of the hardest workers on the team, setting a strong example through her dedication, discipline, and team first mindset. Even as a first-year player, she has quickly earned the trust of her teammates and coaches, establishing herself as both a reliable contributor and an emerging leader."
Off the field, Laub is an Operations Research major who has demonstrated steady academic performance while balancing the demands of Division I athletics and cadet life. She earned Dean's List recognition in Spring 2025 and continues to take on a rigorous technical course load. Her academic discipline is matched by her physical and military development. In the summer of 2025, Laub was selected for and successfully completed the Army's Air Assault School, a physically and mentally demanding 10-day course that trains soldiers in air assault operations, sling load operations, and rappelling.
Laub's leadership is equally evident within her company. Tactical NCO SFC Brandon Ledford observes that "CDT Laub serves as a critical role model within the Company," noting that her leadership approach is one of action. "She does not simply uphold standards," SFC Ledford explains, "but strives to embody them fully, setting the benchmark for others to follow." Hannah's TAC team also praises her character, adding that she is consistently respectful, kind, and courteous and that she "foster[s] a positive and professional environment within the formation." It is this consistency of character, whether in the classroom, in her cadet company, or on the field, that distinguishes Laub as an emerging leader. In recognition of her qualities as a leader, Laub was selected to serve as a Platoon Sergeant for USMA's Summer Leaders Experience 2026, a five-day immersion program for rising high school seniors interested in West Point.
Laub's journey with Army Softball is only just beginning, but she has already proven on and off the field that she is a force to be reckoned with. "She leads with humility while maintaining the confidence and presence expected of a future officer," comments SFC Ledford. Through her performance this semester as a walk-on athlete turned key contributor, a committed student, and a developing leader, Hannah Laub is proving herself an inspiration to her teammates and a leader of character to everyone she meets.
