Men's Tennis Takes Down Sacred Heart and Rider to Open Season

WEST POINT, NY - Army West Point men's tennis (2-1) collected a pair of 4-0 victories over Sacred Heart and Rider while falling to Richmond 4-3 to open the spring season this weekend from Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
Beginning on Friday night against Rider, Marcus Sebastian and Alan Ton got Army started with a 6-3 win in flight one of doubles. After falling on court two, Paul Roberts and Michael Zhang won a tiebreak 7-3 on flight three to give the Black Knights the double point. Daniel Zhou posted a (7-5, 6-1) win on court one to begin the singles matches, as Jack Hanna cruised to a (6-3, 6-0) win flight four. Samuel Haikal clinched the 4-0 victory soon after on court two (6-3, 7-5) as Army won its season-opening match.
Returning against Richmond on Saturday, the Spiders got out to an early lead after securing the doubles point. Army fought back, with Ton securing a win (6-3, 6-4, 6-1) on court six as Richmond eventually had a 3-1 advantage. With three matches going to a third-set tiebreak, Vishnu Bodavula (6-4, 3-6, 7-6) kept Army alive on court four while Marcus Sebastian claimed a huge win on court five (7-5, 3-6, 7-5) to keep Army in it. However, the Spiders were able to clinch the match with a tiebreak win on court two.
With a chance to win the weekend against Sacred Heart, Army got out to a fast start with wins on all three doubles courts as Zhang and Roberts posted their second win of the weekend. Moving to singles, the plebe class took over for the Black Knights beginning with a (6-0, 6-3) victory form Anthony Shalakov on court six. Preston Achter finished off his opponent on court five (6-1, 6-4) soon after, before Alan Ton clinched the 4-0 win on court three with a (6-4, 6-4) triumph.
Army will return next weekend with three more home matches, welcoming Furman on Saturday before taking on DePaul and Boston College on Sunday.
