WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Army West Point men's basketball team (5-12, 1-2 PL) fell to American Saturday afternoon in Bender Arena.
Army opened the half strong jumping out to a 18-13 lead behind a balanced scoring attack.
After that though, turnovers and the Eagles catching fire changed the outlook of the game. They closed the first half on a 30-7 run over the final 9:10 of the first half to take a 15 point lead into the break. Army had eight first half turnovers which led to 13 American points. Army forced only three turnovers in the opening frame to lead to two points.
Nine of the 11 Black Knights to see the court in the first half were able to score, none more than AJ Allenspach who had six points off of one put back dunk and four free throws.
Abe Johnson was strong in the paint with three blocks in the first half.
The Black Knights shot 43.5 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from three but couldn't keep up with the Eagles shooting 65.5 percent and 55.6 percent from deep.
The second half was much of the same for the Eagles. They shot 50 percent from the field in the second half to seal a 79-60 win.
TJ Small finished with 10 points to finish in double figures for fifth consecutive game and the sixth time in the last seven games.
Ryan Curry led the Black Knights with 12 points. He had three assists and one steal as well.
Army will be back in action on Wednesday night against Colgate in Christl Arena.
