January 13, 2024 | Hockey
WEST POINT, NY - Army West Point hockey (6-15-1, 4-10-1 AHA) was taken down by Holy Cross (11-10-4, 6-8-3 AHA) by a score of 3-1 as the Crusaders earned a series split on Saturday afternoon at Tate Rink.
Michael Sacco scored a game-tying goal at the end of the first period, but Army was unable to get anything past Thomas Gale in the Holy Cross as Army eventually outshot its opponent 30-28 thanks to a 16-9 advantage in the third period.
Army opened up the game on the power-play thanks to a pregame protocol violation on the Crusaders, as the story of game one was the 29 penalty minutes from Holy Cross which led to seven Army power-plays. Holy Cross boasts the penalty kill in the conference, and were able to kill off eight of nine penalties altogether in the series.
The teams played even through the first 15 minutes, mirroring the opener which saw a scoreless first. However, Holy Cross broke the deadlock at the 17:40 mark of the frame, with Jake Higgings seeing his shot from near the point beat Evan Szary in the Army net, with Liam McLinskey and Joe Solimine logging the assists.
Army answered right back in the final minute of the period, as good pressure from Ricky Lyle forced a Holy Cross turnover as Max Itagaki then fed Sacco with a perfect pass as Sacco then slotted in five-hole from a tight angle for this third of the campaign. The teams went into the first intermission tied at one.
Four minutes into the second period, Alex Cicero regained the lead for Holy Cross for his seventh of the season, coming on a zone rush with Matt Shatsky providing the final pass. Less than five minutes later, the score was 3-1 in favor of the Crusaders as Jack Seymour then took a feed from Shatsky to fire in his third of the campaign. Holy Cross did not take a penalty in the second period and outshot Army 10-7 as it went into third with a two-goal advantage.
Army had a chance to get back in the game when McKlinskey, Atlantic Hockey's leading point scorer took a minor penalty before being assessed a game misconduct at the 2:17 mark of the third. Army's power-play was unable to get going on just its second and final opportunity of the night, as Gale was up to the task making 29 saves on 30 shots faced in the game.
Army pulled Evan Szary with 2:35 remaining, as Szary finished the night with 25 saves while keeping Army in it throughout. Army maintained pressure as the Crusaders were unable to hit the open net, but Army failed to find its second goal as Holy Cross eventually earned the three points and the split.
Army will return for another midweek matchup, hosting Sacred Heart on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
