WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point Athletics has unveiled a special commemorative logo to celebrate Michie Stadium in its 100th season of football being played at the legendary stadium.
In the celebration of the 100th season of Michie Stadium, merchandise will be available, as well as a weekly 12-part video series, highlighting some of the best moments in the history of the stadium.
This season marks the 100th season of football being played at the historic Michie Stadium, after its opening on Oct. 4, 1924, as Army defeated St. Louis University, 17-0.
Since the opening game, Army has continued a century of winning ways at West Point, compiling a 364-170-7 (.679) record at Michie in the 99 previous seasons.
Michie Stadium, splendid in its scenic beauty and long recognized as one of the most popular stadiums in the nation. Over the years, the esteemed stadium has received its share of praise as one of the most desired locations in which to watch a college football game.
Realizing the need for a permanent athletic field as Army's football program continued to assert itself nationally, West Point officials selected a patch of meadowland adjacent to Lusk Reservoir and within the shadow of historic Fort Putnam. Construction of Michie Stadium was completed in 1924, just in time for Army's 35th football campaign. The original stadium structure was formally dedicated to the memory of Dennis Mahan Michie, who was instrumental in starting the game of football at the U.S. Military Academy in 1890. It was Michie who organized, managed and coached the first football team in history at West Point.
Prior to this 2023 season, new FieldTurf was installed giving a fresh playing surface. Additionally, planning continues on the Michie Stadium Preservation Project. The plans include that the existing East Stands will be removed, and a new 160,000-square-foot structure will be built in its place that will include brand new offerings currently unavailable at Michie Stadium. These new premium spaces include suites, ledge seats, loge boxes and club seats. In addition, the Corps of Cadets seating section will stretch end zone to end zone ensuring that the cadets are a central focus as well as amplifying game-day support of the cadet-athletes on the field.
