Volleyball Drops Season Opener in Five Sets vs. Fairfield

WEST POINT, N.Y -- Army West Point women's volleyball kicked off the new season on Friday morning, hosting Fairfield University. Army coming off a Patriot League Co-Regular Season Championship for the first time since 2009, fell in an exciting five-set match to Fairfield. The match was the first of two on the day as Army will take on California at 7:30pm later tonight.
Match Recap:
In the first set, Army raced out to a 3-0 lead after two kills from Allanah Cutler and one by Paige Fixemer.
Fairfield knotted things up at 3-3 before jumping out to a 9-6 lead forcing an Army timeout.
Later in the match, as Fairfield led 21-17, Army's Savannah Bray brought Army within two points, 21-19, following back-to-back kills.
However, Fairfield took the first set by a score of 25-20. Bray paced Army scorers with six kills on nine total attacks.
In set two, the Black Knights jumped out to an 8-2 lead behind three kills a piece by Bray and Julia Johnson.
Army controlled this set leading 21-14 and then capturing the set win with a kill by Alyssa Lukasik and then an attack error to clinch it.
In the third set, Army raced out to a 9-3 lead behind Bray, who hit an ace, followed by three consecutive kills and another ace.
Johnson had a monster kill to extend the Black Knights' lead, to 13-7.
Army went on to take the third set by a score of 25-14.
In the fourth set, play went back and forth as Fairfield led 16-12.
Making a substitution, sophomore Nora Shattan, led the comeback while she was serving which resulted in two kills by Bray to tie the set at 18 a piece as Army looked to take the set and eventually the match win.
After a kill by Cutler, Army tied the set, 21-21.
Fairfield regained the lead 23-22 on a kill by Svenja Rodenbusch but Army answered by a kill by Fixemer to put Army and Fairfield deadlocked at 23.
However, Fairfield was able to hang on to the fourth set, 27-25 to force a fifth set.
In the fifth and final set, kills by Diana Ethridge and Cutler got Army out front, 4-3.
After some back-and-forth, Fairfield regained the lead, 8-6. Following a timeout, Fairfield went on a 6-0 scoring run, to pull away 12-6 forcing Army head coach Alma Kovaci Lee to call a timeout.
Fairfield went on to control the rest of the set taking the final set, 15-7, winning the season-opening match.

- Julia Johnson led the way for Army with 19 kills, a career-high and a team-high 24 points.
- Savannah Bray (14) and Allanah Cutler (13) were also in double-digit kills.
- Dianna Ethridge had 49 assists and 14 digs.
- Alyssa Lukasik had six blocks.

- Army had 63 kills to Fairfield's 40.
