Softball Drops First Game in Patriot League Tournament

Boston, MA – The Army West Point Black Knights (20-36, 10-8 PL) fell to the Lehigh University Mountain Hawks (40-12, 16-2 PL) in their first Patriot League Tournament game. Army's lone run came in the fourth inning as catcher Maddie Wilkes laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners in scoring position and with the next at bat, Kaci Donaldson drove home a run with an RBI double.

How it Happened?

The first inning didn't see much action as the top of the line up for Army went three up, three down and both teams combined for one hit and no runs. The Black Knights had the same result during their at bat in the second. Brooke Cannon of Lehigh started the second inning with a single to center field. The next at bat, Rory Dudley reached on an Army error that resulted in Cannon scoring the Mountain Hawks' first run.

In the third inning Julia Farris walked and advanced to second on an Alicyn Grete bunt that put her on first. Although Army threatened, they weren't able to match the Lehigh run. The Black Knights left two runners on as they remained down by one run heading into the fourth.

The bats came alive for Army in the fourth. Taylor Brown and Ashton White hit back to back singles as Maddie Wilkes put down a sacrifice bunt that advanced both runners into scoring position. Kaci Donaldson followed up with an RBI double that scored the tying run.

The Mountain Hawks opened up the fifth inning with a triple down the right field line. With one out, Lily Owens hit an RBI single, scoring a run for Lehigh. Army pitcher Breanna Izzo came in for Alicyn Grete to finish out the inning. With runners on first and second, Lehigh third baseman Sydney Parlett had an RBI extending the Mountain Hawk lead to two. Despite the bases being loaded, Breanna Izzo was able to get Army out of the inning without any more runs scored.

Army gave up two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI double from Emily Cimino. The Black Knights couldn't get a late rally in and left a runner on in the seventh.

Lehigh pitcher Chloe Hess pitched a full game with 4H, 1R, 6SO.
Kaci Donaldson had an RBI double.
Alicyn Grete, Ashton White, and Taylor Brown all recorded a hit in today's game.
Emily Cimino went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs.
Lily Owens and Sydney Parlett each recorded an RBI.
