April 16, 2023 | Men's Track and Field
LEWISBURG, PA - Army West Point men's track & field closed out the weekend at the Bison Outdoor Classic hosted by Bucknell University. Athletes set to compete at the Larry Ellis Invite hosted by Princeton University saw the weather cause a cancellation of events for the day.
Ethan Hull collected a win in the pole vault for the Black Knights with a mark of 4.90m, marking back-to-back wins for Hull. Brian McSweeney recorded a third-place finish in the event, also with a 4.90m mark (Hull won the event on misses).
Garrett Gough also registered a win on the track with a time of 29:11.98 in the 10000m, with Erick Lara tabbing second-place with a 29:28.25 mark.Â
Luke Griner posted his second IC4A qualifying time of the weekend in the 800m with a 1:48.43. Griner tabbed third-place in the event while Mitchell Burr's 1:50.12 was good for fifth-place. In the 1500m, Jeremiah Rasmussen paced the Black Knights with a time of 3:44.90 which landed him in fourth-place.Â
Joshua Gilliard posted an IC4A-qualifying mark in the jump with a mark of 2.03m, which saw him finish third in the event. David Counts paced Army in the decathlon with a final score of 6347, while Canyon Hall's 6104 landed him in seventh.

"It was warm today in Lewisburg and in between the rain and the threat of thunder storms, we had a track meet at the Christy Mathewson stadium on the campus of Bucknell University. It was great weather for the field events and the guys took advantage. Our lone winner in the field today was Ethan Hull in the invite pole vault. Brian McSweeney cleared the same height but finished 2nd on misses. Ethan has looked great all spring and is now undefeated in his last two competitions. He is carrying some good momentum as he builds toward the championship season. The Bison Outdoor Classic has a carnival atmosphere from start to finish with a palpable energy surging throughout the stadium. That energy builds throughout the day and culminates with the invitational events in the distance carnival under the lights. Everyone comes with one thing in mind; running fast. That is what we did tonight. Garrett Gough and Erick Lara were our top performers on the track tonight. The 10k was the last race of the night and got started at about 11:25 local time. The guys didn't seem to mind the late hour and when the gun went off Matt Porter bolted to the lead and set the pace for the field of 48 guys. He took it through each lap at 70 seconds and we hit 4:40 at the mile and 9:24 at the 2 mile. He kept pushing the pace through the 5k at 14:43 and then stepped off the track so that Garrett Gough could push toward the goal of 29 minutes in the 10k. Garrett took control of the race in the last 2 miles and started to drop the time down little by little. His winning time of 29:11 was and easy win and a dominating performance. He was followed closely by Erick Lara in 2nd (29:28). Those two guys ran well and looked great. We close out the meet tomorrow with more of the sprints and the majority of the field events." - Director of Track & Field Mike Smith
Sunday
"Cool temperatures this morning gave way to sunshine and warm weather for the last day of the Bison Outdoor Classic. We had a smaller number of athletes competing today; largely in the speed and power events. The majority of our men's performers today were younger developmental athletes that we wanted to put into a competitive situation to see how they handled themselves. By and large I saw some promising performances. It was a valuable weekend across the board for us with the majority of our team getting a competitive opportunity at Princeton or Bucknell." - Director of Track & Field Mike Smith
Army will return next weekend sending athletes to the Virgnia Challenge hosted by UVA and the Bucknell Team Challenge.
