HEMPSTEAD, NY – No. 16 Army West Point women's lacrosse improved to 5-0 this season with a 14-11 road victory over Hofstra (2-4) on Saturday afternoon.
Army outscored the Pride 4-1 in the final frame as the game was knotted at ten through three quarters. Brigid Duffy continued to lead the Army attack, posting four goals and three assists. Army had six players score multiple goals in the game with every attacker proving a threat in the Black Knights offense this season.
Lindsey Serafine collected her first career win in the cage, making four saves while allowing just one goal after coming on in relief late in the third quarter. The 11 goals allowed marked a new season-high for the Black Knights, with Army narrowly winning the shots (32-31) and draw controls (15-14) battle.
The game started with business as usual from Army, scoring early and often to jump out to a 3-0 lead less than three minutes in. Julia Franzoni got the scoring started off a feed from Duffy, which was followed by Kathleen Sullivan's ninth goal of the season. Carleigh Armstrong was fouled soon after, and would go on to convert her free-position shot as Army was off and running.
Hofstra settled into the game as the quarter progressed, answering with a 3-0 spurt of its own to even the game up 10:27 in. The game of runs continued, with Army getting back on track with Sullivan and Duffy each netting goals to put Army back up 5-3. With goals on either side of the first break, the Pride was able tie the score again at 5-5 with Nikki Mennella securing a first-half hat trick. Hostra took its first lead with 8:36 to go in the half, marking the first time that Army has trailed since the first quarter against Jacksonville on February 16.
Julia Gorajek quickly got the goal back with an assist from Duffy, as she would quickly return the favor less than a minute later as Duffy restored the lead at 7-6. Army's freshman standout would add two more before the half to mark four in the opening half-hour, giving Army an eventual 9-7 lead at halftime. Lacey Bartholomay made six saves in the half in goal for Army.
Gorajek scored her second of the game as Army led 10-8 early in the half but would go for its longest scoreless stretch of the game. Not scoring for the final 12:57 of the quarter, Army saw itself head into the fourth in a 10-10 tie. Lindsey Serafine took over in the cage for the Black Knights following the 10-10 scoreline late in the frame. Serafine quickly responded, making saves on a pair of free-position shots which would've given Hofstra the lead.
Jolie Riedell earned a free-position attempt 30 seconds into the fourth, converting to give Army back some momentum. After the teams traded possessions and turnovers, Julia Franzoni scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal to put Army ahead 12-10. Getting a woman-up advantage soon after, Madison Warne found Armstrong for her second tally of the game as Army put the pieces together in the final quarter. The Pride cut it to a two-goal game with 4:09 to play, but Army was able to gain possession after another save. Riedell sealed the deal with a goal with under a minute to play after Army was able to milk clock in possession. Army was tested on the road but posted a 14-11 final scoreline over the Pride to maintain its undefeated record.
Coach's Corner
"Our team played a tough, gritty game out there. We knew that Hofstra would give us their best. They are a talented team and I'm proud of the way that we played for 60 minutes. We made a change in net when it was tied up and Lindsey Serafine stepped up to the challenge and was a game changer for us. Both sides of the ball played extremely hard. It's always good to get a win on the road after a big win the week prior. We continue to get better as we go, and I'm happy with the pride that we play with." - head coach Michelle Tumolo
