March 24, 2023 | Softball
WEST POINT, NY – The Army West Point softball team (8-20, 1-0 Patriot League) earned an 8-3 victory over Holy Cross (5-17, 0-1 Patriot League) in its Patriot League season opener. It was also the Black Knights first game back at the Army Softball Complex in 327 days.
Army escaped a bases loaded jam in the first inning without giving up a run. After the first two runners got aboard in the bottom half, freshmen Taylor Brown sent her fourth home run to deep center field to put Army up 3-0 early.
The Crusaders would strike back in the top of the third when they plated two unearned runs with two outs.
Holy Cross' Jessica Mott tied things up at three with a homer to left center field in the fourth.
After being held scoreless for four innings, the Army bats got back to work. Two bases loaded walks in the fifth inning gave the Black Knights a 5-3 lead. Kayla Edwards would hit a sacrifice fly making it 6-3.
Next, Ashton White stepped to the plate and ripped a double down the left field line, scoring two runners to push the Army lead to five.
Breanna Izzo was dominant out of the bullpen. She went the final 3.2 innings only allowing one hit, not allowing a walk or a run, while striking out four Crusaders.
The Black Knights would hold on to win their Patriot League and home opener 8-3.
They'll be back in action with a double header on Sunday with first pitch of game one from the Army Softball Complex slated for noon.
