Baseball Falls in Heartbreaker to South Florida

TAMPA, Fla. – The Army West Point baseball team (6-9) fell in a heartbreaker against South Florida (7-12) in walk off fashion 8-7.

The Army bats got going early with its first three batters lacing hits to take an early 1-0 lead on South Florida with a single from Sam Ruta.

After a walk, and a fielder's choice that saw everyone reach base safely, Ross Friedrick smacked a single to make it a 2-0 ball game.

Braden Golinski reached on a throwing error that brought in two more runs pushing the lead to 4-0 over the Bulls.

South Florida got a run back making it 4-1 in the third on an error but Tanner Gresham worked his way out of the jam only allowing the one run.

After a leadoff double from Derek Berg, a wild pitch and hit by pitch, Kevin Dubrule singled with a bunt right to the South Florida first basemen to make it 5-1. Two batters later, Justin Lehman plated two more runs making it 7-1 in the fifth inning.

South Florida tacked on three runs in the sixth to make it a 7-4 ball game but Robbie Buecker came out of the pen and immediately got a three pitch strike out to keep the damage there.

The Bulls made it a one run game in the seventh when Daniel Cantu plated his third and fourth RBI of the night. The Black Knights worked out of the inning to hold their one run lead going into the eighth.

South Florida would tie it up at 7-7 in the eighth on a fielder's choice.

The Bulls hit a walk off homer in the bottom of the ninth to take the matchup.

Army starter Tanner Gresham (No Decision) worked 5.1 innings, allowing 7 hits, 4 runs, struck out 5, while walking 2.
Senior Ross Friedrick batted 2-4, having an RBI, and two runs.
Derek Berg went 3-3, had 2 doubles, and 3 runs.
Relief pitcher Robbie Buecker went 1.2 inning, having 3 hits, 3 runs, while striking out 3, and walked 1.
Center fielder Braden Golinski batted 2-4, having a double and an RBI.
South Florida starter Ethan Brown (No Decision) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing 9 hits, 7 runs, 6 earned runs, striking out 6, and walked 1.
Chandler Dorsey (2-1) got the win, working 0.2 inning, struck out one, and walking one batter.
Black Knights pitcher Patrick Melampy (0-2) got the loss, pitching 0.2 inning, allowing 1 hit, 1 run, while striking out one batter.
