Black Knights Split Doubleheader Against Wright State, Gresham has Career Game

DAYTON, OHIO – The Army West Point baseball team (6-7, 0-0 PL) defeated the Wright State Raiders (4-9, 0-0, Horizon) 8-1 in Game 1 of a three-game series Saturday afternoon. Army's Derek Berg went 3-4, having two runs, two RBIs, a double, and a home run. Starter Tanner Gresham had a career-high of ten strikeouts.
In Game 2, the Black Knights fell to the Raiders 5-4. Derek Berg went 2-5, having a run and an RBI.
How it Happened
GAME 1 (Army Wins 8-1)
In a seven-inning contest, Army starter Tanner Gresham (1-1) pitched a complete game, had a career-high of ten strikeouts, scattered two hits, and walked one, after facing 26 batters.
The Raiders struck first with Justin Riemer hitting a leadoff home run, taking a 1-0 lead. The Black Knights got out of the inning with a fly out and picked off the runner at first.
With two outs in the second inning, Army threatened the Raiders with a runner in scoring position, Wright State starter Jake Shirk got out of the inning with a fly ball and a strikeout.
Wright State attempted to extend their lead with two outs and had two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the second. The Black Knights got out of the inning with a strikeout.
Senior Kevin Dubrule hit an RBI double to left field, sending Ross Friedrick in to score in the top of the third, tying up the game 1-1.
Army took the lead in the top of the fourth inning, with Derek Berg hitting a two-run home run to left center, sending Addison Ainsworth across the plate, making it a 3-1 game. The Raiders threatened to cut into the Black Knights lead with Andrew Patrick ripping a double down the lift field line, Gresham got out of the inning after striking out Drew Baker.
The Black Knights further extended their lead in the top of the sixth, with Justin Lehman scoring off a throwing error by Luke Arnold, making it a 4-1 game.
Entering the seventh inning, Garrett Peters came into relief for the Raiders.
In the seventh inning, Berg hit a leadoff double, putting a runner in scoring position for Army. Sam Ruta hit a single to center field, sending Berg home, making it a 5-1 game. With two runners on, Ruta scored off a wild pitch, giving the Black Knights a 6-1 game. Junior Braden Golinski then hit a double to left field, bringing Ross Friedrick into score. With two outs, Justin Lehman hit an RBI double to left field, sending Golinski into score.
In the bottom of seventh, the Raiders got a runner in scoring position with one out with Drew Baker advancing to second on an error by Bret Copeland. Army got out of the inning with Arnold fouling out.
GAME 2 (Wright State wins 5-4)
Wright State struck first against Army starter Matthew Ronnebaum, with Andrew Patrick scoring a run, making it a 1-0 game.
The Black Knights got on the board in the top of the fourth inning with Braden Golinski hitting an RBI single to left field sending Kevin Dubrule home, making it a 1-1 game. Golinski advanced to second on the play, putting a runner in scoring position.
Golinski advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Army took its first lead of the afternoon with Bret Copeland hit a sacrifice fly, bringing Golinski across the plate, making it a 2-1 game.
The Raiders responded in with Sammy Sass ripping an RBI single to left field, sending Gehrig Anglin in to score, tying up the ballgame 2-2.
Robbie Buecker came into relief for starter Matthew Ronnebaum.
Army and Wright State were tied up in the sixth inning when the Black Knights retook the lead after Derek Berg hit an RBI single through the left side, sending William Parker across the plate. Army added another run with junior Sam Ruta blasted a double to left field bring in parker to score, making it a 4-2 game.
Wright State stayed in the ballgame. With a runner on base, Sass hit a double to right field, sending Anglin across the plate, cutting Army's lead to one run. The Riders tied the game up when Boston Smith hit a sacrifice fly, bringing Anglin in to score.
Patrick Melampy (0-1) came into relief in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Wright State retook its lead when Arnold hit a leadoff double, putting a runner in scoring position. With two outs, Jay Luikart singled to right field, bringing Arnold home, making it a 5-4 game.
In the top of the ninth, Luikart game into relief for the Raiders.
Army threatened to tie the game, Berg hit a leadoff single through the right side, putting a runner on base. With two outs, Dubrule hit a single, putting runners on first and second. The Raiders got out of the inning with a ground out.
