Rifle Downed by Navy in Star Match
February 04, 2023 | Rifle
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Army West Point rifle team fired high marks in aggregate, smallbore and air rifle, but it wasn't enough as the Black Knights were downed by host Navy, 4711-4667, in the annual Star Match Saturday at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.
In addition to winning in the NCAA scoring system, the Mids bested Army, 5880-5833, in the service academy format that uses the top five marks from eight predetermined starters.
Army's 2349 score in air rifle tied its season high, set against Air Force, while its aggregate (4667) and smallbore (2318) marks are the second highest fired this year.
Kyle Kutz led the Black Knights in smallbore claiming third-place honors with a season high 586, and Chris Jennings was Army's high scorer in air rifle with a career high 591 to place fifth.
In the aggregate scoring, Kutz was Army's leader with an 11780 aggregate (586 smallbore/584 air rifle) to rank sixth. Anusha Pakkam was next with an 1169, followed by Ashley Clegg (1165), Ashton O'Connell (1161) and Claudia Sigel (1160).
In addition to Kutz' mark in smallbore, Pakkam posted a 579 to rank sixth followed by Sigel (577), Clegg (576), O'Connell (576) and Briggs Moore (576) rounding out the rest of Army's top 10 shooters.
Jennings' 591 mark in air rifle led an Army sweep of the next three places with Pakkam tallying a 590 and Clegg a 589 to place seventh and eighth, respectively.
COACH'S COMMENT:
"Unfortunately, we lost to Navy today," said disappointed coach Leighton Dempster. "It's bittersweet as the team fired the second highest score of the season with several personal bests. Ashley Clegg (589 Air Rifle), Ashton O'Connell (576 SB), and Chris Jennings (591 Air Rifle) all had personal bests in today's match.
"It's never a good feeling to lose to Navy, but I am proud of how we represented ourselves. We made corrections from our match last weekend at Kentucky, and it showed in our score. We have an off week before we head into the NCAA Qualifiers, and the team is determined to continue working hard to see improvement in performance and outcome."
