WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point Rifle Team turned in season and career highs outpointing MIT, 4667-4411, in its NCAA Qualifier match at Tronsrue Rifle Range Saturday.
The Black Knights outpointed the Engineers 2325-2158 in smallbore and 2342-2253 in air rifle en route to tying its second highest aggregate score of the season (4667).
Anusha Pakkam earned match honors in air rifle (592) for the second time this season and was the leader in the aggregate scoring (1173). Kyle Kutz was Army's top shooter in smallbore with a season-best 588, breaking his previous high of 587 set in a win over John Jay.
Army swept the top eight sports in both smallbore and air rifle to dominate the meet. Rounding out the top five in smallbore, led by Kutz' 588, were Chris Jennings with a personal best 582, Pakkam was third (581), Briggs Moore fourth (580) with Ashton O'Connell tying her season high (576) for the fourth time to earn the fifth spot.
Trailing Pakkam's mark of 592 in air rifle were Spencer Gillis, second with a personal best 588, Jennings one point behind (587) for third with O'Connell (584) and Moore (583) placing fourth and fifth, respectively, in rounding out Army's top shooters in that discipline.
In the aggregate scoring, Pakkam was the leader (1173) followed by Jennings (1169), Kutz (1169), Moore (1163) and O'Connell (1160).
COACH'S COMMENTS
"Today was a very good day for our team," commented first-year coach Leighton Dempster. "Our athletes turned in some great scores to come out with a win. Kyle (Kutz) recorded an excellent score in smallbore and we are excited to see if he qualifies as an individual during the NCAA Selection Show.
"We also had three athletes tie their personal bests today, and that is encouraging going into the conference (GARC) championships next week. Five of the teams in our conference have surpassed the 4700 mark this year, so we will have to dig deep this week and up our standard. We are on an upward trend right now, so I'm looking forward to the championships."
