Gymnastics Sets Season-Best Mark; Narrowly Falls to Navy
February 04, 2023 | Men's Gymnastics
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point gymnastics set a season-high in a miniscule 394.05-393.15 loss to Navy in the annual Star Match held Saturday afternoon at the Gross Center.
The Black Knights, who shattered their previous team mark of 390.15 set at the West Point Open, also topped their previous highs on floor exercise (66.15), still rings (64.15), vault (70.25) and parallel bars (65.65) while tying on high bar (63.0).
Patrick Armstrong, Zachary Perez and Maddox Pabellon championed their events. Pabellon was first on pommel horse with a 14.25, with Armstrong (career high 13.7) and Perez (13.2) winning the final two events, parallel bars and high bar, respectively.
Army held a slim 264.5-264.4 lead after both teams turned in identical 70.25 scores on vault (the fourth event). The Black Knights outscored Navy in the final sixth event, high bar, 63.00-62.50, but the Mids edging of the Black Knights in the fifth event, parallel bars (67.15-65.65) would prove the margin of difference.
Also turning in strong performances were Gabe Almeida, second on pommel horse (14.0) as Army went one-two in that event. Pabellon added runner-up honors on vault (14.3) and Joseph Buselmeier posted a pair of third place finishes on still rings (13.5) and high bar (13.05), respectively.
