Army Defeats Charlotte in 11-10 Win, 2-0 in Series

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Army West Point baseball team (4-1, 0-0 PL) defeated the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (3-4, 0-0, C-USA) 11-10 in Game 2 Saturday afternoon. Army's Kevin Dubrule went 3-4, had 4 RBIs, 2 runs, a double and a solo home run.
How it Happened
Kevin Dubrule gave the Black Knights a two-run lead in the eighth inning hitting a 2-run RBI double to left center, proving to be the deciding factor against the Niners as Army defeated Charlotte 11-10 in Game 2.
Charlotte got on the board first with a 2-run home run by Brandon Stahlman, scoring Kaden Hopson in the top of the first inning, attacking Army starter Matthew Ronnebaum.
The Black Knights bats came to live in the top of the second inning, as senior Kevin Dubrule hit a solo home run, making it a one run game. With Braden Golinski on at first, Thomas Schreck hit an RBI single, sending Golinski home to score, tying up the game. With a runner on first and second, Derek Berg hit a 2 RBI single through the right-side sending Thomas Schreck and Justin Lehman home, giving Army a 4-2 lead.
In the top of the inning, Charlotte brought in Matt Little for relief. The Black Knights extended their lead with an RBI single by junior Sam Ruta, sending Addison Ainsworth home. Army again extended its lead, when Dubrule hit an RBI sacrifice fly, sending Berg across the plate, giving Army a 6-2 lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, Ronnebaum retired the side.
In the top of the third, Charlotte brought in relief pitcher Cameron Hansen with a runner on first and second. The Black Knights extended their lead with Justin Lehman scoring off a wild pitch, making it a 7-2 game.
The Niners went three up and three down in the bottom of the third.
After retiring the side in the top of the third, Charlotte got back into the game with a grand slam by Eli Weisner, making it a 7-6 game. The 49ers then tied everything up with a solo home run by Cam Fisher, making it a 7-7 game. Army's Mike Ruggieri came into relief for the Black Knights. With a runner on third, Charlotte retook the lead with a sacrifice fly by Hopson, sending Jack Dragum, making it an 8-7 game.
Charlotte extended its lead to two runs after Will Butcher hit a solo home run to left center, making it a 9-7 game.
The Black Knights cut their deficit to one run after Zac Farrell hit an RBI double down the right field line sending Golinski across home plate.
In the top of the eighth inning, Army's bats came alive again. Kevin Dubrule hit a 2 RBI double to left center, sending Ross Friedrick and Sam Ruta home, giving the Black Knights a 10-9 lead. Braden Golinski hit an RBI single up the middle advancing Ruta to score. Army took an 11-9 lead over Charlotte. Golinski was 3-5 with an RBI and scored twice on the day.
The 49ers continued to hang in the game, Fisher hit a solo home run to right field, making it 11-10. Sean Dennehy came into relief for the Black Knights. Army cleared the side, with Dennehy striking out Blake Jackson and Kaden Hopson fouled out, retiring the side.
The Black Knights took the field in the bottom of the ninth after Charlottle cleared the side. The Niners went in order in the bottom of the ninth, with Dennehy striking out the first two batters. Army sealed their victory with Butcher grounding out to Dubrule.
Inside the Box
- SS Kevin Dubrule is batting 5-11 with 5 RBIs, a HR and a 2B in the first two games of the series. It was his third multi-hit game of the season in five games.
- Army clubbed six extra base hits on the afternoon. Doubles by Ruta, Dubrule, Golinski, Lehman and Farrell and a home run by Dubrule.
- In the second inning Army batted around the lineup.
- Army starter Matthew Ronnebaum (No Decision) worked 3.0 innings, allowing six hits, seven runs, while striking out three, and walking three.
- Charlotte starter Donye Evans went 1.1 inning, Evans allowed six hits, six runs, while striking out two, and walking one.
- Mike Ruggieri (2-0) got the win working 4.1 innings, allowing four hits, three runs, two earned runs, Ruggieri struck out four and walked two.
- Army's Sean Dennehy got the save (2), worked 1.2 inning, Dennehy did not allow any hits and runs, and struck out three batters.
- Charlotte's Sam Conte went 0.1 inning, Conte allowed three hits, two runs, walked one, and had no strikeouts.
