Army West Point Athletics

Kling, Szary & Webber Named December Scholar-Athletes by Center for Enhanced Performance
December 22, 2023 | General, Hockey, Men's Swimming and Diving, Women's Swimming and Diving
WEST POINT, NY - The Army West Point Athletics Association's Academic Support team has selected its scholar-athletes for the month of December, recognizing swimming & diving junior Joey Kling and sophomore Molly Webber along with hockey junior Evan Szary.
Joey Kling '25 (Men's Swim & Dive)
Â
Cadet Joey Kling, a junior from Brea, California, has excelled as a scholar, leader, and athlete at West Point. In addition to performing at the A-level in both the physical and military programs, Joey has maintained a 3.7+ GPA in the nationally-renowned and highly challenging mechanical engineering major. When combining his record in the USMA pillars with his performance in the pool, Joey is absolutely the best all-around member of the Army Men's Swim & Dive team. In the current season, Joey has built upon last year's selection as Second Team All Patriot League to deliver vital point-generating results in backstroke, breaststroke, individual medley, and relay medley events in dual meets with Boston University, St. Bonaventure, and Navy, as well as a multi-team invitational at NC State. These results have postured Joey to hopefully achieve individual wins at the Patriot League Championships this coming spring, in addition to qualifying times for the NCAAs and US Olympic Trials. Â
Evan Szary '25 (Hockey)
Cadet Evan Szary, a junior goalie on the Army Hockey team, has emerged as a top scholar athlete and leader this season; he has played in every game but two and contributed immensely to the team's success thus far. In his third season and one where he has seen his playing minutes increase drastically, he has shown the ability to balance academics with the Hockey team's grueling travel schedule.Â
Â
Evan has been a leader on the ice for Army Hockey through the first half of this season. He is a consistent presence in the goal for the Black Knights, saving over 90% of the shots he has faced thus far. In 14 games played, he has led Army to its only four wins of the season and posted a 3.22 goal against average. In a predictably tough November game with Holy Cross, Evan had 35 saves, which was the catalyst for a 3-2 victory on the road for Army. Whether he is making saves, handling pucks to enable the break-out, or rising to the occasion when his team needs him most, Evan is a key component of the Black Knights this season.Â
Â
Evan is excelling in the core curriculum and has an impressive 3.51 Cumulative GPA. He is a Systems and Decision Sciences major who naturally excels in that field, but he is also performing well in physics, economics, and philosophy. His mental agility and ability to excel across all pillars in the middle of the hockey season is impressive.Â
Â
He is a quiet, steady leader amongst his teammates in group settings, frequently assisting others when studying and always eager to share insight on difficult concepts. His teammates benefit greatly from his ability and willingness to communicate difficult concepts. Evan is not just a scholar athlete, but he excels in the military pillar as well. He has maintained a Military Cumulative Score above 3.0 for his entire cadet career, despite spending very little time in his company area due to the rigors of hockey. His peers and Company mates share positive thoughts about Evan's teamwork and dedication to excellence in the Cadet Company. He is highly effective at directed tasks and achieving results. He consistently displays humility and a desire to improve those around him. He is a great example for those around him for excelling in all four pillars. After spending time playing junior hockey, Evan's ability to quickly adjust to the scholar athlete dynamic here at West Point is impressive. Army Head Coach Brian Riley, his teammates, and the Officer Representatives also recognize his ability to stand out as a leader. He displays that in the classroom, on the ice, and in the company area. Â
Â
Molly Webber '26 (Women's Swim & Dive)
Cadet Molly Webber, a sophomore swimmer from Morris Plains, NJ, is an accomplished scholar-athlete. Last year Molly was selected for first team All-Patriot and continued her domination in the pool throughout the fall season culminating with first place finishes in her three individual races at the Navy dual meet. She achieved a new program record in the 1000-free at 9:58:91 and was the first Patriot league swimmer to put up a sub-10-minute time since 2020. She went on to record a NCAA B-Cut time in the 200 free, setting a new academy record with a 1:46:88, before taking first and climbing to the top of the Patriot League leader board in her third event, the 500-Free. In the classroom Molly excels as a Computer Science major pulling in a 3.7 GPA. Molly serves as one of the team's academic mentors and expertly manages her time to maintain top performance in the pool and the classroom.
