Scovens Has Historic Performance, Men's Hoops Falls in OT to Stony Brook
December 17, 2023 | Men's Basketball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Despite a historic performance from freshman Josh Scovens, the Army West Point men's basketball team (2-9, 0-0 PL) fell to Stony Brook (6-5, 0-0 CAA) in overtime Sunday afternoon at Christl Arena.
The game was one of the best individual performances by a Black Knight in recent memory. Scovens scored 31 points on 12-15 shooting from the field and 6-8 shooting from three. He added seven assists, five rebounds, and four steals to his historic performance. It was only the 16th 30-point game from an Army player since the 2010-11 season.
He became the first player in Patriot League history (with tracked data) to score 30 points while shooting 80 percent from the field and 75 percent from three with at least eight attempts from deep and only the 47th in D1 history and only the seventh freshman.
"Josh Scovens is not a D.O.G, he's a D.A.W.G. He's a dawg," said Lee Anderson Head Coach Kevin Kuwik. "I don't care if the guy is 30 years old, if he's a 12-year veteran who has transferred six times. Josh ain't backing down from anyone. He's going at them and he's getting better every single day. At his core, he's a competitive warrior. We are going to win a lot of games with Josh."
His 31 points are the most scored by a Black Knight this season, the most since Jalen Rucker scored 32 against Boston U on Mar. 2, 2023, and the most by a freshman since Ethan Roberts scored 32 against Bucknell on Feb. 3, 2023. It is the second most points scored by a Patriot League player this season (33 points, Joe Octave, Holy Cross vs. Georgetown). 80 percent shooting is the most efficient 30-point game in the Patriot League this season and tied for the fifth most efficient in all of division one this season. It is the most efficient from an Army player with stats going back to the 2010-11 season.
The game started with Stony Brook racing out to a 15-2 lead but the Black Knights never wavered eventually using a 22-8 run over 6:34 to take a 24-22 lead with 5:38 left in the first half.
The half would eventually end in a tie at 36-36.
The second half was more of a defensive battle, Stony Brook was held to 31.8 percent shooting from the field. The Seawolves' made their run at the free throw line shooting 9-12 in the second half compared to Army's 1-3 from the charity stripe.
Down four, with 1:48 left a Scovens three cut the deficit to just one. After a missed Stony Brook three, TJ Small nailed a three to give the Black Knights a two-point lead with 1:21 left.
The Seawolves Aaron Clarke was sent to the line with 20 seconds left and hit both to tie things up. A missed layup with three seconds left sent the game to overtime. It would be the first overtime contest of the year for the Black Knights.
Stony Brook opened the overtime period on a 4-0 run before TJ Small nailed a three to cut the deficit to just one. He would hit another three to cut the Seawolves' lead to 75-71 with nine seconds left. Josh Scovens would hit a deep three at the buzzer to make it a four-point game.
Army now hits the road to take on UTSA on Thursday, Dec. 21 at 8 pm EST.
