November 20, 2023 | Women's Basketball
Fort Worth, TX – The Army West Point women's basketball team (1-4) traveled to Texas to take on the TCU Horned Frogs (5-0) in the 17th annual Maggie Dixon Classic to honor the head coach who took the Black Knights to the 2006 NCAA Tournament. TCU came away with the 88-51 win. Fiona Hastick led Army in scoring with 13 points followed by senior captain Lauren Lithgow with 11. Freshman Kya Smith was one point and rebound away from her second collegiate double-double as she put up nine points and grabbed nine boards.
How it Happened
Every starter for Army scored in the first quarter. Lithgow and Smith knocked down a shot from beyond the arc while the Black Knights were also strong on the boards. They did not allow the Horned Frogs to grab any offensive rebounds through the first ten minutes and would head into the second quarter down by single digits 13-21.
Junior Trinity Hardy dropped the first points in the second quarter and Lithgow added another three ball to cut the TCU lead down to four just 60 seconds into the quarter. Putting together a response, the Horned Frogs scored eight unanswered points twice to extend their lead to 20 with one minute remaining in the first half. Lithgow led the Black Knights sinking two threes and tallying an assist in the second quarter.
The Black Knights battled tough in the second, Hastick was 50% from the field and led the team through the third quarter alongside fellow freshman Kya Smith. TCU took advantage of its size scoring 67% of its points in the paint as 6'7 graduate student Sedona Prince led TCU in scoring with nine third-quarter points and three rebounds.
Finishing out a strong game, Hastick dropped seven points through the final ten minutes including a three while shooting 75% from the field. After a tough, physical battle, Army fell 51-88 at the final buzzer.
The Black Knights will have a long home stand as their next six games will all be at Christl Arena. Starting off the home stretch they will take on Connecticut College at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, November 22nd.
