November 10, 2023 | Women's Basketball
Poughkeepsie, NY – Army West Point women's basketball (0-2) saw its second half comeback fall short at Marist (1-0) on Thursday night from McCann Arena, with the Red Foxes holding on for a 76-68 victory.
Reese Ericson led the Black Knights putting up 24 points while shooting 85% from three-point range and 56% from the field. Trinity Hardy had another double digit scoring affair dropping 17 points and collecting four steals in the wire-to-wire loss against Marist.
The 24 points and nine field goals made each matched career-bests for Ericson, while the six three-pointers made tabbed a new career-high for the sophomore.
How it Happened
Marist started off the game hitting their first three threes to put up 9. Army had answers on their offensive end as freshmen Kya Smith, sophomore Reese Ericson, and junior Trinity Hardy all found buckets to make it a 6-9 game halfway through the first. Each team would trade baskets until Ericson hit her first of six threes to tie things up at 13. Soleil Montrose and Taylor Wilson put their first points up of the game to give Army the 18-15 lead headed into the second.
The Red Foxes came out hitting their first three in the second to tie the game. Marist would go on a 13-2 scoring run to make it an 11-point game with just over three minutes to go until halftime. Ericson hit back-to-back threes and Anna Eng put up her first bucket to wrap up the scoring for Army in the first half as they trailed it 30-40 going into the break.
Army outpaced Marist in the third quarter scoring 20 points, shooting 50% from three, 46% from the field, and making every free throw. Reese Ericson hit three shots from beyond the arc. Trinity Hardy, Camryn Tade, and Soleil Montrose rounded out the scoring for Army in the third quarter as they battled their way to the final ten minutes down by just five.
Smith and Hardy both hit free throws while Hardy also had a big steal and gave a great pass to Fiona Hastick to cut the Marist lead to one with a little over seven minutes left to play. Marist would respond with six unanswered points until Hardy made two layups to make it a two-point game with a little over two minutes left.
The Black Knights fought tough the entire game and brought this one down to the very last minute where Marist was able to hit some free throws to win the game.
Next on the slate for women's basketball is a home game this Sunday, Nov 12th at 1:00 PM as FDU comes to Christl Arena.
