November 12, 2023 | Women's Basketball
West Point, NY – The Army West Point women's basketball team (1-2) claimed its first win of the season over FDU (0-2) Sunday afternoon. The Black Knights defended home court with a 71-63 victory.
Several Army players had stand-out performances including Camryn Tade, Trinity Hardy, and Kya Smith. Tade played 22 minutes, the most so far in her freshman campaign. She came up huge off the bench helping Army hold onto the win as she scored 16 points shooting 7 for 8 from the field. Hardy had her third straight game scoring double-digits as she dropped 20 points while shooting a perfect 100% from the field, three, and free throw line. She also was a threat on defense and pulled down four boards. Smith recorded her first collegiate double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds off the glass. She also had two blocked shots and tallied two assists on the day.
How it Happened
Army started off strong as Reese Ericson had 12 first-quarter points followed by scoring from Hardy and Smith, the Black Knights led by as many as eight halfway through the quarter. FDU went on a short run, that was stopped by an Ericson three, to cut the Army lead to two. Smith hit the last jumper in the final minute as the Black Knights went into the second quarter holding a 16-13 lead.
FDU hit back-to-back threes to start the second and added a pair of layups to take a 23-20 lead with six minutes left in the half. Kya Smith helped Army put together a tough response scoring eight second-quarter points. The team kept attacking on offense and shot a perfect eight for eight from the free throw line and we headed into the break all tied up at 32-32.
The Black Knights looked to pull away going into the final 20 minutes. Army shot 64.7% from the field and scored 25 points in the third. Camryn Tade came up big as she was productive on the court, scoring six points, shooting perfectly from the field, and dishing out two assists. Trinity Hardy also helped Army extend their lead to 15 with 11 points going 4 for 4 from the field and sinking a three. Army went into the fourth quarter up 57-44
Tade and Hardy scored the team's first six points in the fourth making it a 64-46 game. FDU would put together a 12-0 run on the Black Knights in an attempt to make a comeback, but Army held strong and kept composure as Tade put in a layup to end the scoring drought with just over a minute left to play. Hitting free throws down the stretch, Army held on for the 71-63 win.
Up next for women's basketball is a trip out west as they will have an academy match-up against Air Force in Colorado on Friday, November 17th at 7:00 (MST)/9:00 PM (EST).
