Hockey Drops AHA Contest at Sacred Heart

BRIDGEPORT, CT – Army West Point Hockey (6-11-2, 5-6-1 AHA) fell on the road to Sacred Heart (11-7-1, 10-4-1 AHA) in its first conference matchup of 2023.
Army took a penalty 4:38 into the contest, successfully killing it off in the books but the Pioneers were able to score seconds after the teams returned to even strength. Kevin Lombardi scored the opener for the Pioneers, tucking home a rebound after a Gavin Abric save on an Austin Magera shot from in close. Army was not able to kill of the next penalty, as Sacred Heart made it a 2-0 game with a power-play goal with 7:05 to play in the first. Army was outshot 16-5 in the first period but was given its first opportunity with the man advantage with five seconds to play in the period.
Army was unable to score on the ensuing power-play to open the second, but had an encouraging start to the period, firing six shots on goal in the opening six minutes. Gavin Abric made 10 of his 30 saves in the second frame, but Army was unable to get back into the game with a goal as the Pioneers made it a 3-0 game with 2:50 to play in the period.
Sacred Heart was able to put the game away early in the third, scoring a pair of goals including its second on the power-play to claim a five-goal lead. Army came close in the closing minutes, with Joey Dosan hitting the post in search of his first collegiate goal. Ultimately, Army was shut out for the first time this season as the Pioneers claimed all three points on the night.
