WEST POINT, N.Y. – Sayler Butters reached the 1,000-dig mark as the Black Knights fell in a five-set nailbiter against the Yale Bulldogs on day two at the Syracuse Tournament on Friday.
Butters entered the match nine digs away from 1,000. The Tempe, Ariz. native reached the milestone in the first set with nine digs. The Bulldogs, however, took the first set. With the set tied at 14-14, Yale went on a 5-0 run to create separation. Army cut the deficit to 21-19 before Yale closed the set scoring four of the next six points.
The Black Knights enjoyed their best hitting percentage in the match in the second set (.300). Army never trailed en route to a 25-20 win. Paige Fixemer had six kills on six attacks in the set. The Bulldogs bounced back in the third set, sprinting out to a 7-3 lead. Trailing 14-8, the Black Knights rallied to take the lead at 17-16 after a kill by Mackenzie Lynch. However, Yale answered with a 4-0 run and held off Army for a 25-22 win.
Yale looked poise to close out the match in the fourth set after taking a 11-4 lead. However, Army battled back behind a strong service game from Diana Ethridge. Army took a 14-13 lead after a kill by Kingsley Wallace. The Black Knights eventually built a 21-18 lead, but faced match point at 24-23. Army also fought off match point at 25-24 and 26-25. Lynch tied the set at 26-26, and Army took the lead on an attacking error, and won the set on an ace by Butters.
Yale pulled away in the fifth set to take the match after going on 5-0 run while trailing 8-7.

- Sayler Butters finished with 26 digs in the match where she reached 1,000 for her career.
- Mackenzie Lynch had a career-high 20 kills to lead the match. She also had a career-high 13 digs.
- Paige Fixemer had 14 kills and five block assists
- Diana Ethridge notched a double-double with a match-high 40 assists and 15 digs.
