WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army West Point women's rugby claimed a 62-7 victory over Mount Saint Mary's to open the season at Anderson Rugby Complex. The Black Knights would score 57 unanswered points across the final 70 minutes after facing an early 7-5 deficit.
The Black Knights wasted no time hitting the front to begin the 2022 15s season, going ahead 5-0 in the second minute via a penalty try awarded after Julia Riekena was fouled outside the try zone. Army's lead would not last long, with the Mountaineers finding a seam down the left sideline to score a try and conversion and take a 7-5 lead in the eighth minute. However, the Black Knights were able to answer and never look back, with Gwynn Campos giving the home side a 12-7 advantage less than four minutes later after a Sydney Schaaf conversion.
Continuing to attack within the first 20 minutes, Emma Richards-Smith was able to find Schaff for an easy try to extend the Black Knights advantage. Army was able to add one more try before the half, with Riekena perfectly anticipating a pass from the Mountaineers to intercept it and trot home for the easy score. Alissa Eisenhart added a pair of conversions to give Army a 26-7 lead going into halftime.
Cecilia Ollis got the scoring started in the second half for the Black Knights, scoring a try in her collegiate debut seven minutes into the second half. It was only a matter of time until Codi Butt got in on the scoring barrage, with Sophia Linder playing an inch-perfect offload as the two combined for Butt's first try of the season. Eisenhart would make good on both conversions as Army pulled ahead by a score 40-7 through 55 minutes of play.
The Black Knights were not satisfied there, with firstie captain Kaylee Cargile getting on the scoresheet with a try before Mckhaye O'Boyle ran through the Mountaineers defense to score a splendid solo try down the right flank to make it 52-7. Army would add one more try, with Butt notching her second of the contest as the Black Knights eventually claimed a 62-7 victory to start the season in the win column.
