September 03, 2022 | Football
CONWAY, S.C. - The Army West Point football team dropped its season opener on the road by a score of 38-28 to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on Saturday. Tyrell Robinson totaled 135 yards on the ground including a 70-yard touchdown run which led to a 14-14 halftime score, but the Black Knights were unable to overcome the Chanticleers' scoring prowess in the second half.
The teams traded punts on the first two possessions of the game after the Black Knights possessed the ball first. On Army's second possession, Ay'Jaun Marshall converted a third down with a nine-yard gain to the Black Knights 30-yard line. Tyrell Robinson took a handoff up the middle on the ensuing play, breaking loose from the defense and out-running the secondary for a 70-yard touchdown. Coastal Carolina would convert on a pair of fourth downs on its next possession, with the latter going for a six-yard touchdown pass to tie the score at seven with 54 seconds remaining in the quarter.
After an Army punt, the Chanticleers would find the end zone again with a 26-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter to go up 14-7. Army responded on its next drive, with Robinson converting a third and 10 with a 30-yard burst down the left sideline. The run gave Robinson his third 100-yard rushing game in an Army uniform. After rushes by Tyson Riley and quarterback Tyhier Tyler, Jakobi Buchanan was called on to convert a fourth down from the Chants' 25-yard line with a five-yard rush.Â
Buchanan continued to move the ball closer to the end zone, converting on another fourth down with a seven-yard plunge up the middle to set up first and goal. Buchanan would take the honor himself and get the Black Knights into the end zone with a one-yard score to tie the game at 14 with 4:31 left in the half. The 15-play, 75 yard scoring drive consisted solely of rushing attempts while lasting 9 minutes and 12 seconds. The Black Knights would force a Coastal punt on its next drive, with the score staying knotted at 14 heading into halftime.Â
Coastal Carolina was able to drive down to begin the second half, but were forced to settle for a field goal after an incomplete pass on third and goal with Jabari Moore holding strong in coverage. After falling behind 17-14, Army advanced the ball towards midfield through a fury of rushes to set up a third and short at their own 46. Tyhier Tyler dropped back to pass and found an open Ay'Jaun Marshall down the right sideline, with Marshall sprinting home for a 54-yard touchdown to give Army a 21-17 lead following Quinn Maretzki's third extra point.Â
A true back and forth affair, the Chanticleers were able to cash in on their next possession with a third passing score to make it 24-21 with 1:27 remaining in the third quarter. The Chants would retake possession on an interception on the last play of the third quarter, with the ensuing drive culminating in a rushing touchdown with 9:51 remaining to put Army down 31-21. With the road side needing points in a timely manner, Cade Ballard delivered a 73-yard strike to Braheam Murphy on the second play of the drive to make it a three-point game at 31-28.
The home side would pivotally capitalize on the next possession, rushing in to make it a two-possession game once again with just under four minutes remaining. Army was not able to sustain a drive with the clock ticking down, allowing Coastal to get the ball back after a turnover on downs to see out the remainder of the game.
