September 26, 2022 | Women's Tennis
WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point women's tennis team wrapped up a successful weekend hosting the annual West Point Invitational, the largest tournament on the East Coast, with sophomore Julia Kelly and freshman Emma Sy setting the pace as the Black Knights claimed three championship titles in closing out the three-day invite.
Kelly, who had a hand in claiming two titles, teamed with Jenna Sabile in capturing the B doubles final Sunday morning at Malek Courts, then a few hours later she bested her opponent to capture the C singles championship that was moved indoors to Lichtenberg Tennis Center because of weather. Sy defeated her opponent from Villanova to walk off with the D singles flight tile, while sophomore Cooper Jackson (A doubles) was the third Black Knight who reached the championship round in singles play.
How it Happened-
Kelly and Emma Sy won their respective draws claiming C and D flights singles.
Kelly dominated in the finals at C where she defeated the number one seed, Cornell's Sofia Iantosca, in a close match by pulling out a 10-4 tie-breaking set to claim the title. She had her ticket punched to the finals following an injury to Cornell's Tayna Fan in the semis. The Army sophomore, who is undefeated, downed Quinnipiac's Nikole Lisovyy, Fordham's Lorraine Bergmann, and UConn's Nansi Toskovai (quarterfinals) en route to advancing.
In the D Draw, Sy defeated Villanova's Amanda Rivera in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 to claim the crown. In the semifinals Sy, who was the number one seed in the tournament, defeated teammate Jenna Sabile in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6, to advance to the championship round.
Jackson pulled out a tough tie-breaking set in the semifinals of A singles where she bested Danielle Hack (11-9) to advance to the finals where she fell to Cornell's Lan Mi in a tie-breaking set, 11-9.
It was Army vs. Army in the B doubles quarterfinal match where Kelly and Sabile defeated teammates Sophie Mackenzie and Carolyn Ahn en route to advancing to the championship where they bested teammates again, this time the duo of Paulina Feoli and Elizabeth Gilbert for the crown.
