With Army West Point's first-win of the season on Saturday vs. Villanova, Coach Jeff Monken recorded his 59th career win as head coach of the Black Knights, moving past former Head Coach Charles Daly for sole possession of second place on Army's all-time wins list. Daly still holds the best win percentage for all Army coaches with over 40 career games at .804.
"This has nothing to do with me. It's the players and the coaches that make things like this happen. Now let's go get a whole bunch more (wins)." - Army Head Coach Jeff Monken
Monken is in his ninth season in command of the Black Knights, being named the 37th head coach in program history on Dec. 24, 2013. Monken owns a career record of 97-61 career record as the head coach at both Georgia Southern and Army.
Under Monken, Army West Point has enjoyed success over the past six seasons with a .674 winning percentage, including four wins over Air Force, four wins over Navy (2016, 2017, 2018, 2020), four bowl-game victories (2016, 2017, 2018, 2021) and X Commanders in Chief Trophy's.
Additionally, under Monken Army has seen two of the best seasons in program history as Army has three 10+ win seasons in program history (1996, 2017, 2018) and Monken has led two of them, being the only Army coach to lead two 10-plus game winning seasons during a head coaching tenure in Academy history.
In his four seasons at Georgia Southern prior to his West Point tenure, Monken authored a 38-16 mark and spearheaded the programs transition to the elite Football Bowl Subdivision level from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) ranks.Â
Daly was a 1905 West Point graduate, amassed 58-13-3 (.804) as head coach of Army in two separate stints that lasted from 1913-16, 1919-22 (8 years).
"Coach Charles Daly won his 58th and final game as Army Head Football Coach in 1922. Many members of his family followed in his footsteps to attend West Point and serve as Army officers. Coach Daly's family is delighted that Coach Monken is now won the second most games as Head Football Coach, and we wish him continued success in the seasons ahead at the Academy." - John Daly, Charles' grandson, West Point Class of 1973
A native of Joliet, Ill., Monken played wide receiver for four years and earned two varsity letters in track and field, while earning his bachelor's degree from Millikin University in 1989. He was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in October 2013 and collected his master's degree from Hawai'i in 1991.
