COACH'S CORNER
"Going into the meet I had us second in scoring on both the men's and women's sides so our runner-up finishes today were not unexpected. We scored in the areas where we knew we could and where we expected to score but, in the end, we just didn't have enough scoring opportunities to come out on top on with either of our teams.
Today marks three consecutive runner-up finishes for our women at this meet. From 2008 when we last won an outdoor title, to 2019 we never finished higher than 3rd at the outdoor meet and now we have strung together three consecutive runner-up finishes. While that is not our objective it is an indication of the improvement these women have demonstrated over the last few years and the kind of talent we have in our graduating firstie class. We scored 176 points which ranks as our second-highest scoring total (216 in 2021) since 1998 and we won four events. Our winners did a remarkable job of competing in what I can confidently say were the worst conditions I have ever experienced at an outdoor conference championship. And that is going back 28 years. We had everything you could imagine. We had a lightning delay, we had sustained winds of 15-18 mph with gusts up to 25. We had constant rain. It was next to impossible to stay dry. And once you were thoroughly soaked you had to just stand in your own puddle and be wet. It was a really challenging environment. Having said that, some of our people stood tall and got the job done.
After yesterday's great results in the hammer, we picked things right back up by winning the discus. Only this time it was a relative unknown that took home the title. Emily Mikoud, Emily Fink and Abigail Green have been doing the Yeoman work for us all season but today it was Karly Parcell that decided she was going to win the discus and then she went ahead and won it leading us to a 1-2-3 sweep. Her winning throw of 48.47 was a meter farther than she has ever thrown in conditions that could best be described as horrific. It was difficult to keep the discus dry and even more challenging to keep your hands dry. Getting a good grip on the disc was not consistent nor easy. Our other marks in the discus were not particularly special but they were better than everyone else. Kayley Ragazzini spent the last month convinced that she wasn't any good at the discus and then she went out and got second today. Our women dominated the competition in that event.
In all, we scored five women in the discus, four in the javelin, five in the shot, and five in the hammer. We scored 97 points in the women's throws this weekend in what has to be the most dominant throws performance ever by an Army throws group. We had two other winning performances today. Anna Tovkach won the women's 800 in an expected fashion. She took the lead from the gun, never looked back and was never challenged. She has been the most dominant middle-distance runner in the Patriot League all year and finishes her Patriot League career with both the indoor and outdoor titles as a senior. We closed out the meet with a win in the 4x400m relay with Tovkach on the anchor. The group of women that we put out there really showed some grit battling on each leg until finally giving the stick to Anna with a comfortable cushion over the field.
Emily Fink was awarded the female rookie of the meet trophy for her win in the hammer and third place finish in the shot. It was a nice reward for her performances this weekend and also recognition of how good her hammer throw really was yesterday. She is now in the top 15 in the NCAA East region which is an extraordinary accomplishment for a young woman who was first introduced to the event in August." - Mike Smith
