Baseball Battles at Columbia
May 29, 2022 | Baseball
NEW YORK, N.Y. – In its final tune-up before the NCAA Championship, the Army West Point baseball team lost an 8-5 result at the hands of Columbia on Sunday afternoon at Satow Stadium.
Despite claiming an early lead, the Black Knights (31-23) were unable to hold on as they dropped the game to the 2022 Ivy League Champions.
Army used the matchup as a staff day, throwing a different arm each inning. Of the eight different Cadets that appeared on the mound, only Brian Dawson, Matthew Ronnebaum and Joe Valchar emerged without allowing any earned runs. Teddy Lepcio (2-2) was hit with the loss.
Offensively, the team had a slower day as the Black Knights' lineup combined for seven hits while leaving four runners stranded. Ross Friedrick led Army at the plate, turning in a 2-for-4 performance to go along with two RBI.
Friedrick got going early in the contest, as his RBI single and a pair of doubles from Derek Berg and Cam Cerruto put the visitors up 4-0 in the top of the first. The Lions (30-16) slowly chipped away at the deficit over the next four frames and eventually took their first lead in the fifth when a pair of runs boosted them to a 5-4 advantage.
While Friedrick tied the score up in the top of the sixth with a solo shot that led off the inning, it was the closest that the Black Knights got down the stretch as Columbia tacked on three unanswered tallies.
What's Next
Having secured the Patriot League's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship by winning their fourth-straight title, the Cadets will await to hear of their postseason fate during the selection show on Monday, May 30. The action will be streamed on the NCAA website starting at Noon.
