May 13, 2022 | Softball
BOSTON, Mass. --- Army West Point Softball's (20-34, 10-8) season came to a close on Friday afternoon when the Black Knights fell 1-0 to Colgate (20-27, 9-9) on the second day of the 2022 Patriot League Tournament.
How It Happened
It was a battle of the pitchers from the start of the contest as Jolie Duong (10-14) and Colgate's Bailey Misken combined for 12 hits allowed.
Duong had a stellar game for the Black Knights both in the circle and at the plate. She opened the game by retiring the first three batters to then fire off a leadoff double in the bottom of the first. Army was unable to bring Duong home and left the Cadet on base.
The teams were scoreless in through the second inning but both teams was able to record a hit in the inning. Lauren Little fired off a two-out single for the Black Knights but was left on base. In the top of the third, Colgate scored one run of two hits to take a 1-0 lead over Army.
In the bottom half of the inning Duong hit an infield single to get the momentum going for Army. She traded places with Kayla Edwards as a fielder's choice took out the lead runner. Leila Hurst kept the momentum going with a standup double down the left field line to put runners into scoring position for Army. The next two batters were retired, and the two runners were stranded on base.
The teams were quiet for the next two innings before Army attacked in the bottom of the sixth. Edwards hit a leadoff single to get the momentum going for the Black Knights. Hurst followed with a base hit of her own to get runners on first and second. Maddie Wilkes laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position. Army was unable to take advantage of the runners as the next two batters were retired.
Duong retired the Raiders in order in the top of the seventh to get Army back to the batter's box. Little hit a leadoff single to start something for Army and was quickly moved to second by a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Kaci Donaldson. The runner was left on base as the next two Cadets were retired. Army ultimately dropped the contest 1-0 to Colgate and was eliminated from the 2022 Patriot League Tournament.
